Every year, TikToker Cody Jacob (@imcodyjacob) Googles his father's name because he's trying to search for an obituary. Since he hasn't been able to find an obituary so far, he believes his dad must still be alive, but they are not in contact with each other.
After searching once a year for 15 years, Cody suddenly found his father's arrest record. It was from 1998, and it was for attempted homicide. Believe it or not, the person that Cody's dad tried to murder was Cody himself.
Apparently, the trauma began before he was even born. His dad was a "wealthy, alcoholic, homicidal maniac" who tried to kill Cody's mother when she was pregnant with him.
Cody was born two months early, and his father had custody of him until he was eight years old. Eventually, Cody escaped and went to live with his mother. Sadly, by then, the damage done to her body was irreversible.
"But unfortunately, when my mother escaped, her wounds and her issues and her traumas were so severe from the domestic violence that she had already begun to die," Cody explained.
"We didn't know it at the time, but he beat my mom so badly, he tried to kill her, that she had to have her pancreas removed."
His mom ended up dying from brittle diabetes, a rare form of Type 1 diabetes that causes severe swings in blood sugar levels.
Cody's story struck a nerve with many TikTok users, especially those who also grew up estranged from abusive parents.
"Mine was famous enough that when he did die, I just got to read a bunch of articles and social media comments talking about how amazing he was, which just made me madder," commented one user.

"This reminds me it is time for my annual search. My mom has always said the best Mother's Day present would be a photocopy of his obituary. So, I check right before each year just in case," revealed another.
"Turns out my dad is running a business with his new wife, and he has a whole storytelling page about him on his business website where he states that he's a proud father of four kids (he has six: my sister, me, and our four step-siblings)," wrote a third.
"I Googled myself once and found my dad's obituary. That's how I found out he died. I am still baffled as to why they bothered to include me in the obituary of a man who had absolutely nothing to do with me my whole life," added someone else.
Even years later, survivors can still find themselves searching for answers or trying to wrap their heads around the fact that a parent can cause so much harm.
