If someone gets proposed to and says they need time to think about their answer, do you think that means the relationship is forever doomed?
This 35-year-old man has spent the last three years with his 34-year-old girlfriend, who has a five-year-old son with her ex. Back when he met his girlfriend, her baby daddy was not involved in her son's life at all and dipped out the day he was born.
He's been in his girlfriend's son's life since he was an infant. They all moved in together more than a year ago, and he's stepped into the role of a dad to his girlfriend's son.
"A few months ago, though, her ex came back into the picture wanting to reconnect with his son. My girlfriend has been happy about it because she always wanted her son to have both parents involved if possible, which I completely understand," he explained.
"Since then, they’ve been in contact a lot more to coordinate things. There have been a few moments where I’ve made comments about how it’s convenient that he suddenly wants to be a dad now after missing the first several years, and she’s gotten a little defensive and said he was young and immature back then, but seems like he’s genuinely trying now."
He thinks his girlfriend desperately wants her baby daddy in her son's life, but her defensiveness upset him. Anyway, a month ago, he proposed to his girlfriend.
He spent quite a lot of time planning the proposal, and since he, his girlfriend, and her son have already been acting like a family, this appeared to be a natural progression to him.
"When I proposed, she got emotional and told me she loved me, but then said everything feels a little chaotic right now and she doesn’t think this is the right time for an engagement with so much changing in their lives," he added.
"She asked for time to think. I told her that was okay because I didn’t want her to feel pressured, but if I’m being honest, the whole thing hit me harder than I expected."

His girlfriend has been treating him normally following the proposal, which has thrown him off. He hasn't asked her again what her feelings are regarding getting engaged, but it's made him unhappy to quietly wait around for her to make up her mind.
He's left wondering if he should address the engagement with his girlfriend again, or stay silent until she brings it up.
Ok, I think if someone says that they have to consider getting engaged, it's a no. His girlfriend is stringing him along, and I'll bet that she probably has feelings for her ex, which made her say she has to think about his proposal.
After three years together, his girlfriend should know by now if she wants to be married to him one day. I think he should dump her and move on.
What advice do you have for him?
