When you're dating someone, do you think it's your responsibility to share every shocking or gruesome or sad detail about your life with them, or can you keep some things to yourself?
For the last ten months, this 24-year-old girl has been dating her 25-year-old boyfriend, and he's the first serious relationship she has ever been in.
Now, she grew up with a bad home life, and when she was 15, she got involved with a guy who was far older than she was. He got her pregnant, and then she suffered from a miscarriage.
"It’s obviously not my favorite thing to talk about, but it’s also not some big dark secret that I’m haunted by. I was very young, in a bad mental state, and an unhealthy environment," she explained.
"A lot has changed, and I’m proud to say I’m very far away from that time [in] my life. My BF did not know about this - not that I was keeping it a secret, it just never felt right to bring up before."
"But a few days ago we had a conversation about having children in the future/pregnancy, and I ended up telling him. I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, and I didn’t expect him to do so either."
Well, he became infuriated and screamed at her for keeping a major secret from him. Her boyfriend treated her like she had intentionally lied to him.
He basically acted like she was a totally different person from the one he thought he knew, simply because she failed to tell him something about her past.
He stormed out of there and wouldn't answer her calls or texts for days. Yesterday, he finally got back to her and said he's no longer mad, but he has to take some time to think about everything.

"My mom said that I should be patient and that I can’t expect him to react better after learning something so 'drastic,' but I can’t help but feel angry at him for freaking out," she continued.
"On one hand, I know it’s a shocking thing to learn out of nowhere, but it’s my life, my experience, one that was in the past and has no effect on the present."
"The way he acted made it seem like he thought less of me because of it, and had the right to know about this before getting with me. Am I being selfish/unfair?"
I don't think she did a single thing wrong, but I do find her boyfriend to be an immature jerk for how he reacted to the news. It's perfectly fine to wait until you feel comfortable disclosing things about your past to your partner.
You aren't obligated to share all of the things you've ever been through with your partner. It's ok to naturally let things come up in conversation as a relationship progresses.
