This Piano Teacher Refused To Provide A Little Girl With Free Lessons After She Broke A Piano Key And Her Mom Wouldn’t Pay The $500 Repair Fee

This professional musician and music teacher currently has a piano at their house that they use to give piano lessons.
But recently, while teaching their neighbor’s daughter, the little girl accidentally did some serious harm while playing the instrument.
Apparently, one of the piano keys was significantly damaged. And after reaching out to a repair company, the piano teacher learned it would cost about $500 to fix the single key.
“Which was a lot of money for me to pay out of my pocket,” they said.
So, the piano teacher wound up talking to the little girl’s mom about the damage. And thankfully, the woman was very apologetic and even offered to pay the repair costs.
After the teacher agreed to be reimbursed for the damage, though, the woman went back on her offer. More specifically, she wound up calling back later and explaining how she could not afford to pay $500 for the piano repair.
Instead, the little girl’s mother actually just asked if the piano teacher would be willing to provide free piano lessons to her daughter!
And while this is obviously not a fair trade, the piano teacher still felt torn about what to do.
“Because I could understand how important music lessons could be to a young child,” they explained.

“But at the same time, I knew that my time and services had value.”
That’s why the piano teacher ultimately decided to just be transparent– explaining to the little girl’s mother how they would love to help out her daughter for free. However, that just was not possible since they couldn’t afford it.
Afterward, the piano teacher decided to propose a different suggestion. They offered to provide the woman with either a payment plan or even a discount for her daughter’s future piano lessons. And at the time, the woman seemingly understood that payment for lessons was necessary and agreed to move forward with the piano teacher’s payment ideas.
Just a few weeks later, though, the teacher wound up finding out that the same woman started to spread nasty rumors– accusing them of being heartless and greedy. So, obviously, this realization really hurt the teacher’s feelings. And honestly, they just felt bad for the little girl for having to miss out on the piano lessons.
“Especially since she was so passionate about playing the piano,” the teacher said.
While they really wanted to help out the little girl, though, the piano teacher just had to be realistic about their own financial situation.
That’s why they wound up suggesting that the woman either look into other piano lesson options for her daughter or just work on saving up funds for future piano lessons. Ever since the little girl broke the piano and the piano teacher refused to provide her with free lessons, though, they’ve been left wondering whether that was the right way to handle the situation.
Do you think it was fair for the teacher to expect reimbursement for the broken piano key? Was the woman requesting free lessons after her daughter damaged the piano key an equal trade? Can you understand why the teacher refused to provide free lessons? How would you have dealt with this situation?
