As kids, we're taught to believe that getting married is one of the most important milestones, and hitching yourself to someone else will make weathering life's triumphs and tribulations much better. But divorce statistics prove that picture-perfect marriages aren't guaranteed, so countless couples actually come to regret tying the knot instead.

Sadly, this man can relate and thinks that marrying his wife was the biggest mistake he's ever made in his life.

"People told me marriage would bring me peace, stability, and a sense of direction. What it actually brought me was stress I never imagined," he admitted.

That's because, back when he first started dating his wife, their relationship felt "effortless." They'd travel, and she'd laugh at his jokes. And even doing something simple, like going out to a cheap restaurant for dinner, seemed like a real "adventure."

But years have passed by since then, and now that they're spouses, he feels like he's constantly tiptoeing around his own house. Plus, despite working more than ever, his effort is never deemed "enough."

"The house, the bills, the plans for the future... There is always something I am behind on," he said.

As for his wife, he doesn't feel like she's the same woman he fell in love with, either. She spends her nights scrolling on her phone, sighing at the idealistic and luxurious lives of others on social media.

Deep down, he wonders if that's just "what happens" over time, because he knows that he can't compete with the opulent apartments and "filtered" getaways other couples enjoy.

So, from time to time, he catches himself reminiscing about how much easier life felt when he was single.

"Back then, if I failed, I only disappointed myself. Now, no matter what I do, I feel like I am disappointing someone else," he vented.

He realizes that his marital experience isn't what every couple goes through. In fact, some spouses really do manage to make their relationships work.

Nonetheless, saying "I do" resulted in a life that's far from what he was promised, and today, he views getting married as one of his largest life mistakes.

Do you think pop culture paints marriages in an unrealistic light? Could he and his wife work on improving their relationship together? Or should he walk away?
