When TikToker Ashley (@ashleyeliz_) was a registered nurse, addiction led her down a dangerous path. She got caught stealing medications from the hospital where she worked. She ended up voluntarily surrendering her nursing license. She did not get sober and eventually went to prison.
When she got to prison, she found out that she was pregnant with her first child. She was released from prison right before having her baby.
After seven years of sobriety, she is now in the early stages of trying to reinstate her nursing license. In her video, she talks about what she does for work after losing her nursing license.
Once she had her baby, she stayed home with him for about 15 months. Her husband had moved to another state for work, so she followed him. She got an interview with a doctor who had his own family practice.
"Of course, I was very forthcoming with everything that happened and was very honest, and he gave me a chance, and I did his referral appointments for him," Ashley explained. "I was a patient navigator, so that was my job title."
She learned how to do a little bit of everything while she was there, including basic reception work and billing and coding. A couple of years in, the doctor decided to close his medical practice and go to another clinic. She followed him there and now does his medical records.
Ashley has been steadily employed in the medical field again for about five years. If all goes well, she hopes that she'll be able to keep her job and possibly work as a nurse.
Many TikTok users shared words of encouragement and stories of others who had successfully made comebacks in the nursing field.
"I worked with a nurse who lost her license the same way, went to prison, and got her license back. One of the best nurses I have worked with," declared one user.

"I worked with a nurse who got himself into a similar situation. He surrendered his license and went to rehab. Got his license back after about seven years. That's been around 10 years ago. He is now one of the best nurses I know," commented another.
"I have a friend who is an RNBSN, and the same happened to her, and she was able to get hers back, but it took years of counseling and drug testing. Good luck. You got this!" exclaimed a third.
