If one of your parents got married to someone who ended up not liking you for your gender identity, of all things, what would you do?
This 21-year-old woman came out as trans six years ago. Her mom and dad were super supportive of her, and they have pretty open minds, so she thinks this is why they have been so accepting of her identity.
Her parents got a divorce when she was quite small, and her childhood was spent going back and forth between their respective houses on a weekly basis.
Her mom got married again four years ago, and her stepdad is wonderful. Of course, her preference is to hang out with her actual dad, but her stepdad is so kind to her.
A couple of years ago, her dad met a woman at work named Martha, and they started dating. Since she's been in college, she hasn't been able to spend that much time with them.
Her dad and Martha got married in September of last year, and Martha has one son. She was thrilled about getting to have a stepbrother, as she never got to have siblings, and they have gone on to develop a great bond.
One month ago, she was on a FaceTime call with her dad when she made a remark about taking her estrogen, and Martha overheard it. Martha was taken aback and questioned her about whether she needed help or had issues with her hormones.
"I was so confused. I shook my head, almost laughing out of nervousness. My dad told her I was trans AT THAT MOMENT. I couldn’t even process that he never even bothered to tell her when she stood up, and my dad hung up on me," she explained.
"I knew she was a religious woman from the few conversations I’ve had with her when I came to visit, but turns out she’s *deeply* religious. I haven’t heard from her since."

"My stepbrother texted me some weeks after saying he didn’t care if I was trans, since he’s also an only child, he would protect his only sister. He ended up telling me that Martha had prohibited him from talking to me and, in a way, also told my dad to stop 'supporting my sin.'"
She relayed all of this to her mom, who became enraged. Her mom issued her dad an ultimatum over the phone in order to force Martha to show her some respect.
She was also there when her mom called her dad, and she decided to provide her dad with her own ultimatum: if Martha is going to hate her for being trans, he needs to make a decision between her or Martha.
She's left feeling heartbroken because she didn't want her dad to have to pick between her and his wife. She has always had love for Martha and her stepbrother, and she never pictured it would come down to this.
It's so sad to me that Martha is so full of hatred that she is willing to ruin her relationship with her dad. Her dad has been so encouraging of her in the past, and I hope that he still is in the future and picks her over his wife.
Her dad probably should have shared this information with Martha well before they got married if he knew she was so rooted in religion.
What advice do you have for her?
