There’s a certain kind of story almost every woman can tell—a moment from when they were younger, still figuring things out, when an older man overstepped their boundaries.
For TikToker Halina (@groovyrockerchick), it happened when she was 19 years old and working on Mackinac Island for the summer. There was a 40-year-old guy who worked for the mail delivery service on the island, and they crossed paths often.
He seemed to take a particular interest in her. For instance, he always came up to her and tried to propose a hangout or a hookup. But every time, before she could answer, he would say that he wasn’t looking for anything serious.
“So, almost every day that I worked, I would take packages from the retail store I worked at and bring them to the post office down the street because we had an online store,” said Halina.
“I’d be outside on the sidewalk, which was where my interactions with this guy started happening. He would always be on his bike delivering packages…and he would come up to me.”
He regularly complimented her and told her that he kept thinking about her, and he wanted to hang out sometime. She was caught off guard each time because this guy was clearly twice her age.
He asked for her phone number so many times that she eventually just gave in. She now knows never to do that, but back then, she was young and inexperienced.
She thought that if she gave him her number and did not respond to his messages, he would leave her alone. But that was not the case.
This man texted her, making his intentions clear. He said that he was looking for a summer hookup and didn’t want to be in a serious relationship. She ended up blocking him.

Looking back, she recognizes just how uncomfortable and inappropriate the situation was, especially given her age at the time. Her story opened the floodgates for others to share similar experiences. Too many people could relate.
They described being teenagers when significantly older men approached them in ways that were predatory, putting them in positions where they felt unsure how to respond in the moment.
It’s unsettling just how common these incidents are. The pattern shows up again and again in different forms.
“When I was 18, my 40-year-old neighbor left a love note on my car window at 5 a.m.,” commented one user.
“My 16-year-old sister’s male coworker, who was legit like 50 years old, was texting her, asking to smoke and drink with her,” stated another.
“When I was 17, my 32-year-old coworker (with a wife and kid) asked to make out with me at work and smoke with him,” chimed in someone else.
