Airport security usually involves long lines, overpriced snacks, and the occasional awkward pat-down. It’s not every day that someone is casually asked to help spy on foreign countries for the United States government.
A couple of years ago, TikToker Lexie (@lexie.limitless) was breaking a world record for being the youngest person to travel to every country in the world when the U.S. government asked her to work for them as a spy.
At the time, she had been traveling around the Middle East and was on the way back to the U.S. There was a strange symbol on her boarding pass, but she didn’t think much of it.
While she was going through the airport immigration line back to the U.S., the immigration officer started talking to her about her travels and looking at all her passport stamps.
It was a totally normal conversation. Everything seemed to be going according to routine.
But then, the officer directed her to another room and handed her passport to another officer. Confused, she followed the officer into the room.
She had never received extra questioning going into the U.S. before. She quickly came to the conclusion that this was no longer a standard airport interaction.
The second officer started asking more questions about her travels. She explained that she was trying to break a world record.
Overall, the officers remained friendly throughout each interaction. There was no yelling, intimidation, or accusation. If anything, the situation felt strangely casual.

Eventually, they escorted her downstairs to collect her luggage. That was when the conversation took an even more unexpected turn.
As they started walking toward the door, one of the officers said, “We at the U.S. government would love it if you hear anything or see anything, especially when you’re traveling in places like Syria or Yemen, that you could just let us know.”
He also wanted to get her contact information so they could potentially discuss the subject further. She gave him her phone number because she was curious to see where it would lead. Despite the unusual interaction, nothing ever came from it.
Looking back now, Lexie mostly finds the entire experience funny. Although she never got the chance to launch her secret-agent career, the encounter left a lasting impression on her.
“Ultimately, I never ended up hearing back from anyone about that,” said Lexie. “It was still one of the strangest interactions I’ve ever had at an airport.”
“And honestly, I feel like the idea of a travel influencer being any type of spy for the government is just a terrible idea. Literally the least discreet people on the planet. But I do feel like it could make for the plot of a really funny movie.”
