She Asked Her Aunt Where Her “Pretty Twin” Was After Her Aunt Compared Her To Her Identical Sister
This seventeen-year-old girl and her sister are identical twins. But, three years ago, she was sadly involved in a domestic fire accident, and her sister was not.
So she suffered numerous burns, with the most severe ones affecting her neck, chest, and cheek. And understandably, surviving the fire has come with countless challenges.
First of all, the recovery process had been a long and slow one. And aside from trying to physically heal, she has also been battling her mental health.
The burns have directly impacted her self-esteem and sense of worth. Plus, looking at her twin sister and imagining what she would look like without the burns is never easy.
Thankfully, though, she has begun seeing a psychologist and even started to feel much better.
“I still have my insecurities, but I live one day at a time,” she said.
Well, that was all until she saw her family recently, and they threw her back down the rabbit hole of insecurity.
For context, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, she had not seen her relatives in years. And she does not have social media or enjoy taking pictures of herself, to begin with, so they never got a chance to see her after the fire.
Anyway, that all changed this past weekend since she traveled two hours away for her grandmother’s birthday. And her entire family attended the celebration.

From the start, she was not exactly thrilled to be seeing anyone. Apparently, her aunts and uncles on her mother’s side would always confuse being playful with being downright rude.
This time, though, the comments were different. It all began after she got to her grandmother’s house and went outside to hang out with everybody.
“Since it was very sunny, I put on protective clothing and a hat to avoid sunbathing. So, there was little to see, and no comments or observations were made,” she recalled.
Eventually, though, it just got too hot to handle, and she decided to take off her blouse. That’s when the trouble started.
Apparently, a few of her younger cousins– who are about two years old– saw her burns after she took off her blouse and began freaking out. In fact, they actually screamed in fear and then burst into tears.
Obviously, this made her super uncomfortable. But, at the same time, she recognized that they were just children and got over it.
It was not until her aunt came out to see why the kids were crying, though, that things got really ugly. First, her aunt asked what was wrong, and she explained.
Then, her aunt tried to reassure them by describing what had happened. And finally, for whatever reason, her aunt decided to point at her identical twin and compare them to each other.
“She would be pretty like that if it weren’t for the injuries. They are twins,” her aunt actually told the children.
She was shell-shocked to hear that comment come out of her aunt’s mouth, and honestly, it made her feel terrible. So, she decided to give her aunt a taste of her own medicine.
“I just asked, ‘Where’s yours?’ And when she got confused, I said, ‘Where’s your pretty twin? Isn’t she here?” she explained. Yikes!
If you could not have guessed it, her aunt got really pissed off and claimed that she was just trying to reassure the kids. Her aunt also claimed that she should not talk about other people’s appearance and referred to weight– even though she never made any direct insult about that.
Then, once her parents heard about what happened, they also called her out for being a total jerk. Plus, they have been pressuring her to apologize to her aunt and grandmother since, apparently, she ruined the birthday festivities by causing a fight.
To be frank, though, she has no idea why she should be required to apologize, and it has only pissed her off more. After all, why are her parents defending her aunt’s comment after knowing about her self-esteem struggles?
Thankfully, at least her sister is completely on her side and believes that her aunt was entirely out of line.
Regardless, though, she has still been left wondering whether or not snapping back at her aunt was the wrong thing to do.
Why do you think her aunt felt inclined to make that rude comment? Do you think she had a right to fire back at her aunt? If you had been in her shoes, how would you have responded?
