As we close the curtain on 2022 and welcome 2023 in just a few days, there is no denying that fashion trends here in the United States underwent a significant reboot.

This past year, we said goodbye to skinny jeans, midi skirts, and cold-shoulder tops. Many consumers also swore off purchasing items from unsustainable retailers– for good reason.

We then witnessed the comeback of many fashion fads that emulate the Y2K era. I’m talking about mini purses– popularly sported by the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan– as well as baby tees, pleated mini skirts, and, to many people’s dismay, low-rise jeans.

On top of 2000s streetwear style “coming back” onto the scene– and making millennials feel kind of old, might I add– some of the hottest television shows of this year also inspired countless clothing connoisseurs to take on a whole new wardrobe.

A new study conducted by fashion experts at Boohoo actually analyzed Google search data for numerous search terms associated with outfits and fashion for every new and recurring television show released in 2022. And their results revealed that TV entertainment left a serious mark on “what’s in” this year.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the hit HBO series “Euphoria” came out on top as the most fashionable show of 2022. In fact, it even stole the title of the most fashionable show of all time!

This makes a ton of sense since, first of all, every single character arguably has their own distinct style– providing viewers with many different options to choose from.

Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, is a vulnerable yet resilient character who typically dons oversized items reminiscent of west coast streetwear– such as sweatsuits, basketball shorts, and vintage items.

And the “It Girls” Cassie Howard and Maddy Perez may be best friends who dress to the nines, but they also have intrinsic style differences. Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, is a sweet and sentimental character– whose traits are normally emulated by the light and bright colors she wears.

Maddy, on the other hand, is the confident, extroverted, and emotional character played by Alexa Demie. These traits ultimately translated into Maddy coming off as a more abrasive force in the show– and her edgier style, which includes sharp-winged eyeliner, fitted bodices, and the iconic cutout yoga pants, reflects that.

Finally, characters Kat and Jules also add a whole other level of representation to the show. Kat Hernandez, played by Barbie Ferreira, is a multidimensional character who is sometimes sweet and reserved or, other times, downright bold and sassy.

And her evolution as a character has inspired many plus-size women to depart from typical fashion trends and opt for more rebellious get-ups.

For instance, remember when Kat went from wearing sweater vests and cardigans to donning collars, harnesses, and corsets? What an empowering evolution!

Jules, too, represents a transgender high school student who is not afraid to experiment with “out there” fashion, either. Played by Hunter Schafer, her character is known for layering, mixing bright pops of color, and experimenting with bold makeup.

So, it comes as no shock that around the globe, nearly 133,000 Google searches related to “Euphoria” fashion were typed in every single month.

The second-place rank may be a bit more surprising, though. “Emily in Paris” actually earned the silver medal in this race to the top– gaining an average of 31,000 Google searches each month.

Starring Lily Collins, this hit comedy drama’s style takes a ton of influence from classic wardrobe staples such as blazers, tailored dresses, longline coats, and cardigans but updates them in a modern and colorful way.

Interestingly, ’80s fashion fads are also re-entering the mainstream style scene since the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things” finished as the third most fashionable show of the year.

The show first aired back in 2016, but this past May, season four of the series was released and continued to mesmerize viewers around the globe.

So, perhaps the show’s staple denim-on-denim, bold hairdos, polka dots, high-cut swimsuits, and suspenders will make an even larger comeback in 2023– since the “Stranger Things” fashion earned just under 29,000 Google searches per month.

Coming in fourth and fifth place for most fashionable shows of 2022 was Peaky Blinders and Bridgerton. The former welcomed an average of 18,200 wardrobe-related Google searchers per month; meanwhile, the latter received over 14,000 monthly.

The rest of the list included “Killing Eve,” “Heartstopper,” “The Crown,” “The White Lotus,” and “Wednesday.”

Although it appears that “Wednesday,” starring Jenna Ortega, might top off the rankings in 2023 since the show’s debut last month has continued to spark viral style influence across social media platforms– most notably, TikTok.

Until next year, though, trend followers will just have to wait and see.
