She Accepted A Ride Home Late One Night From A Man Claiming To Be An Off-Duty Police Officer, And She Nearly Met A Terrible Fate In Their Ride Alone Through The Woods
There is nothing worse than finding yourself stranded in cold weather. Whether you’ve been locked out of your house or your car broke down, being in these kinds of situations in the middle of the winter is the worst.
One woman was so desperate for help after a fight with her abusive boyfriend left her locked out of her home that she took a ride from a stranger who seemed helpful. However, he ended up being the total opposite.
A few years back, she attended a party with her boyfriend at the time, who was toxic and abusive towards her.
He got jealous and angry about something at the party and threw her out of the house as soon as they got home. It was around 2 AM, and she didn’t have her purse, phone, or wallet.
All she was wearing was what she had on at the party. She banged on the front door and begged to be let back in, but her boyfriend wouldn’t answer. He just turned off all the lights in the house and left her there.
She was anxious about going to a neighbor’s house. There weren’t that many people in the area, to begin with, and she didn’t want to wake anyone out of their sleep. But after what ended up happening to her, it turns out that would have been her best option.
After standing out in the cold for a while, she decided she would walk to the closest gas station. It was just under a mile away, and there would be a phone she could use to call a friend. But while walking to the gas station, she was freezing cold.
Suddenly, a white pickup truck that had passed her on the opposite side of the road stopped and made a U-turn. It pulled up right next to her.
Inside was a man who asked her what she was doing out so late. She politely told him that she was meeting her friend at the nearby gas station.
He was very charming and asked if she wanted a ride. She told him, no, but he kept on convincing her that she should get in his car. He then flashed what looked like a police officer’s badge.
He told her that he was an off-duty policeman, which explains why he was wearing regular clothes. Although she knows now that she should have never listened to him, she felt like she was going to freeze to death and agreed to get in his car. She figured that the gas station was so close that she would be fine.
On their drive, the man told her that his name was John and that he has a wife and kids. He was very friendly and made her feel safe.
There were some things in his car that were somewhat alarming, like a bunch of trash, rags, and even a pair of handcuffs.
“He apologized, saying that it was the truck he took hunting,” she recalled. “But it was super warm, so I was happy and didn’t mind at all.”
She asked to use his phone, but he told her that the battery died. Then, things took a turn when his car drove past the gas station. When she pointed out that he passed it, he didn’t answer her.
Feeling sick to her stomach, she began to cry as John drove further and further away from her destination.
She asked him where they were going and if he could turn around, but he still didn’t answer. Eventually, the only words that came out of his mouth were, “Girls shouldn’t be out so late,” and other threatening phrases.
As John drove, she contemplated what she would do. She knew that she would hurt herself if she tried to jump out of the car and that John could still catch her.
She wanted to grab the wheel to crash into something so she could escape. Thankfully, she had the smart idea to push the handcuffs on the floor of the car behind her seat so that he couldn’t grab them right away.
Other than that, things were looking quite grim. At one point, he pulled over to the side of an empty road and told her that if she tried to run, he would catch her.
After sitting in the car together for a while, John admitted that he didn’t have a wife or children. He told her that he was thinking of what to do with her, while she cried and said she wanted to go home.
Eventually, he kept on driving. They reached another gas station, which he pulled into and parked. She got out of the car as quickly as possible as he tried to explain to her that he was trying to teach her a lesson “not to hitchhike with strangers.” Some lesson!
At the gas station, she called the police and her friend. Unfortunately, the police weren’t much help and claimed they didn’t have enough evidence to find who John was.
“I mean, I definitely never hitchhiked again,” she explained. “So if it was a lesson, it certainly worked. I never heard anything back having to do with the case. I never heard of any other odd experiences up there – maybe it was just one man trying to teach me something.”
What would you have done if you were in her shoes that night?
