Her Brother And Sister-In-Law Don’t Want Her To Take Her 11-Year-Old Niece Skiing Anymore, But They Also Want Her To Lie About The Real Reason Why And She Is Refusing
This twenty-nine-year-old woman has an older brother named Hugo, who is thirty-one. But, back when Hugo was just nineteen, he got his then-girlfriend Amy pregnant.
Amy and Hugo went on to have a daughter together– Ashley– and also got married. Later, the couple also welcomed another child into the world, but this time, it was a baby boy.
Anyway, her niece Ashley is now eleven-years-old, and over the years, they have become quite close. Even though she lives abroad, she always made an effort to hang out with Ashley whenever she was home in order to build a close relationship.
They would often shop together, watch shows, go horseback riding, and more. Then, whenever she was away, she and Ashley would keep in contact over text.
“Ashley is bright and thoughtful, just a pleasure to be around,” she said.
And even though Ashley’s mother, Amy, has never liked her that much, Amy has put those feelings aside so she and Ashley could have a tight-knit aunt-niece relationship.
This Christmas, though, she and her boyfriend plan to visit her family for the holiday before leaving to go on a ski trip.
And originally, Ashley was supposed to go skiing with her and then stay with her and her boyfriend for New Year’s Eve.
Amy apparently was never too keen on that plan but initially said yes– particularly because of how excited Ashley was to spend time with her and learn how to ski.
As of this past week, though, it appears that the entire plan has gone out the window.
The issues all began on Friday when she borrowed her boyfriend’s rental car to pick Ashley up from school.
And since the rental just so happened to be a sports car, Ashley was super excited and had all of her school friends sit inside to take pictures.
Then, they went back to the house to have dinner with Amy and Hugo. And during the meal, Ashley decided to ask if she could drive and chaperone some of Ashley’s friends at the ice skating rink in town on Tuesday.
Now, at that moment, Hugo made a comment about how she probably did not want to get stuck watching a bunch of kids. Plus, he pointed out how his wife Amy had already planned to go with the children.
Ashley straight-up ignored Hugo’s input, though, and continued begging her to go. And to be honest, she did not mind going whatsoever. The only problem was that Amy looked pretty annoyed by Ashley trying to change the plan.
So, she told Ashley that she did not want to butt in and make anything more difficult. But then, Ashley kind of berated her mother, Amy.
“Ashley kept pushing and said she did not want Amy to come because Amy dressed badly and was never fun and embarrassed her,” she recalled. Yikes!
This immediately prompted Hugo to tell Ashley to apologize, and the tween did. However, Ashley still insisted that everything she said was true.
So, at that point, Amy started to get teary-eyed, and Hugo tried to point out how Ashley had upset her mother.
According to her, though, this only made Ashley angrier about Amy chaperoning and actually led to Ashley kind of getting grounded.
More specifically, Ashley was told that because of her behavior, she was no longer allowed to go ice skating at all.
And this made her niece so upset that Ashley is no longer speaking to Amy.
Anyway, she left the dinner that evening, and nothing had come up about her ski trip plans. Well, that was until just yesterday when she was approached by Hugo and Amy privately.
Apparently, the couple told her that they did not want Ashley to go skiing anymore. Amy specifically claimed that Ashley needed to spend more time with family, and Hugo took his wife’s side.
On top of taking away the trip, though, Hugo and Amy also asked that she not tell Ashley the truth.
Instead, they wanted her to lie and just tell Ashley that she and her boyfriend had changed their plans and would not be going skiing at all anymore.
That way, Ashley would not be able to blame Amy– since Amy reportedly wanted to build a better relationship with Ashley.
Honestly, though, despite understanding that, she just did not feel right about lying to her niece.
“And if her parents made the decision, they need to deal with the consequences. Not push it onto me,” she added.
So, she ended up telling her brother and sister-in-law that– but they had mixed opinions of her perspective.
On the one hand, Amy tried to say that if she cared about Ashley, then she would realize that it is best to “fall on her sword” rather than try to further alienate her niece from Amy.
On the other hand, Hugo simply said that all three of them should take until Wednesday to think over the situation and decide on the best course of action.
In the meantime, though, Ashley has still been acting very standoffish toward Amy. And she knows that if Ashley finds out Amy canceled the ski trip, then Ashley’s view of her mother will only get worse.
“And I just want what’s best for Ashley,” she vented.
So now, with the holiday rapidly approaching, she has been left wondering if refusing to go along with Amy’s plan to lie makes her a jerk or not.
Is it normal for girls around Ashley’s age to be embarrassed by their mothers? Does that make what Ashley said about Amy during dinner okay? Even if Ashley acted rudely, and Amy and Hugo wanted to take away the ski trip as a consequence, should she be expected to lie about it? How would you handle this situation if you were in her shoes?
