This 26-year-old woman’s father sadly passed away just a few months ago. And since her parents had gotten separated– and her father’s second wife died a few years ago– she was named the sole beneficiary of his will.

Among the possessions that she was entitled to was a special painting, which was hand-picked by her dad’s late wife as a decoration for their new home after getting married.

“It was something of a wedding celebration present,” she recalled.

“And his wife didn’t work, my father bought the painting, and the paperwork was all in his name. So it was included as part of his estate.”

However, her dad’s late wife did have a daughter named Ellie, who is 27. Following her father’s passing, Ellie also reached out and asked if there was any way she would consider parting with the painting to allow Ellie to have it.

Apparently, Ellie claimed that her mother had loved the artwork a lot and believed the painting held a lot of sentimental value. But honestly, she found those claims a little fishy.

“I was a little suspicious of this because if this was the case, surely she could have asked my father for it after her mother’s passing,” she explained.

“But nevertheless, I considered it.”

According to her, the painting is worth a ton of money in addition to being really beautiful.

So, while she was considering giving it to Ellie, she was not exactly happy about the idea of giving up the painting.

Still, since she was not planning to sell the painting and did not think it held any special sentimentality to her, she ultimately decided to just give the artwork to Ellie.

Afterward, she told Ellie that she would straighten out the paperwork and make arrangements to have the painting shipped.

Just last week, though, she completely changed her mind. At that point, one of her friends– who works at an art gallery where her father used to purchase a ton of his art– informed her that Ellie had reached out, asked for an evaluation of the painting, and was trying to sell the artwork.

Her friend only reached out because they had no clue who Ellie was but were well aware that the piece belonged to her father since it was a one-of-a-kind painting.

That’s why her friend was concerned about someone trying to “fence” the art.

Anyway, after she found out what Ellie was up to, she felt like a complete idiot. She really thought she was gifting Ellie the painting for sentimental reasons, not for it to be pawned off for a large sum of money.

So, she decided to call Ellie to confront her about the situation. And at that point, Ellie came clean and “reluctantly confirmed” the plans to sell the painting.

She was then forced to reveal how she just did not feel great about giving away one of her late dad’s possessions just so it could be sold– especially after getting lied to.

“But Ellie said that was none of my business, and I should give it to her anyway since that money would mean more to her than the painting ever had to me,” she revealed.

She has since reached out to some other people for advice on the situation, too. However, she claimed they all have “skin in the game,” which is why she isn’t sure what to do.

So, she’s now been left wondering whether not giving Ellie the painting after all would be justified or if that would just make her a real jerk.

How would you feel if you were lied to like that? Does she have a right to not want to give the painting to Ellie if it’s just going to get sold? Or is it really “none of her business?” What would you do?
