Gut instincts rarely come out of nowhere. Usually, they creep in when something feels off, or when the energy between two people shifts in a way that words can't quite explain away.

He's been carrying that uneasiness for some time, brushing it aside because he wanted to believe the rough patch with his girlfriend was temporary. But those messages didn't shock him; they only confirmed what his body already knew: the relationship isn't sitting right anymore.

This 28-year-old man and his 27-year-old girlfriend have hit a tough moment in their romantic connection. He has a career as a sous chef, while his girlfriend just started a job working as the head nurse at a prison.

Given how demanding their jobs are, they honestly don't have much time to spend with one another right now. When they do hang out, they're so exhausted that it's not exactly meaningful.

His girlfriend has been filling him in about all the new friends she's made at her job, and he's been thrilled about that. He is not the jealous type, and so he hasn't been worried about his girlfriend having male friends.

He himself has a lot of friends of the opposite gender; however, there is one coworker his girlfriend keeps talking about, who has given him some doubts.

He was so concerned about his girlfriend's coworker that he ended up snooping through her phone, and what he found confirmed his worst fears.

"There were messages with them calling each other 'baby' and 'sweetness.' And saying that they love and miss each other. The conversation ended Thursday with the guy saying he’s been 'craving her so...hard this week,'" he explained.

"I feel like an absolute [jerk] snooping through her phone, even tho we use each other's phones occasionally. Idk if anything’s even happened between them or if she’s just been toying with the idea since [she] and I are in a rough patch. Idk what to do."

"She’s asleep, and her meds knock her out good, so it’d be pointless bringing it up now. I have no idea how to go about asking about this. I'm not great with confrontation or standing up for myself."

Now the question isn't whether he should've looked, it's what he does with what he found. Pretending nothing happened will eat him alive, so I think he needs to be honest and not minimize what he saw just because confrontation is uncomfortable.

If she's serious about him, she'll cut things off with her coworker and put real effort into repairing the damage, but if I were him, I would dump her because who needs this kind of nonsense in their life?

What do you think he should do?
