When couples start talking about living together, it's usually an exciting step forward. For her, that conversation came with a shock: her boyfriend announced his mom would be part of the deal.
Suddenly, the dream of sharing a space with her partner turned into the reality of sharing it with his mother too, a woman who already criticizes how she folds laundry and thinks she deserves the biggest bedroom.
Three years ago, this 28-year-old woman began dating her 30-year-old boyfriend. Overall, things are great between them, and they have been talking about moving in together and getting more serious.
As she and her boyfriend got around to discussing apartment options, he dropped it on her that he expected his 55-year-old mom to live with them full-time, too!
"Here’s the thing: his mom and I get along okay, but she’s… involved. Like, she’ll make comments about how I 'don’t fold laundry right' or how her son 'deserves homemade meals every night,'" she explained.
"Once, when I stayed over, she actually rearranged my overnight bag because she thought it was 'too messy.' I asked him why she would need to live with us since she’s healthy, has a stable job, and already has her own apartment."
"His response? 'It just feels right. Family comes first. Plus, she’d help us out around the house.' When I told him I wasn’t comfortable with that arrangement, he blew up and said I was being disrespectful to his mom, that I knew how important she was to him, and that if I 'really wanted a future' with him, I should accept the package deal."
What's even more upsetting to her is that his mom is going around pretending like she has already agreed to the living arrangement.
Her boyfriend's mom has been making Pinterest boards for decor ideas and saying she needs the largest bedroom so she has enough room to set up her 'prayer corner.'

She let her boyfriend know that she's not interested in living with him if his mom is a mandatory roommate, and now he's complaining that she's forcing him to choose between her and his mom.
"His friends think I’m heartless. My friends think I’m dodging a bullet. So, [am I ther jerk] for refusing to live with my boyfriend and his mother? Because honestly… I’m starting to wonder if I’m dating him, or both of them."
Wanting a home that feels like her space with her partner isn't selfish; it’s the bare minimum for building a life together. Since it's not like her boyfriend's mom needs financial help, I'm just confused why she has to move in with them.
Why is her boyfriend's mom not already living with her son if it's that important? I don't think she should cave to guilt or let him spin this as disrespect. If he can't picture a future without his mom in the middle of it, then she needs to rethink the whole relationship.
Do you think she's being unreasonable, or is her boyfriend the crazy one for trying to make her live with his mom?
