When TikToker Devin (@devinramonreal) was working at a preschool center, there was one major rule that educators must follow. If someone unfamiliar comes to pick up a child, they must have their ID checked to confirm that they’re on the pickup list.
One afternoon, a strange man walked into Devin’s classroom and threw the whole day into chaos. He did not greet Devin, introduce himself, or acknowledge him in any way.
He locked eyes with one of the students, Billy, and told him to get going. Devin stepped in front of the man and asked for his ID to verify his name on the pickup list.
The man tried to walk past, but Devin politely insisted on seeing his ID again. Still, the man refused to take out his ID. He grabbed Billy and walked out of the classroom.
Fortunately, the assistant director walked by, and he yelled out to her about what had just happened. She took off after the man at a brisk pace.
Devin spotted an assistant teacher doing dishes and asked her to get to his classroom to watch the kids. She jumped into action and ran into the classroom.
Devin chased the assistant director and this man down the hallway. They were able to lock Billy in the office while they confronted the man.
He kept screaming, demanding to know why they wouldn’t let him take his son.
They explained again that they needed to see his ID before he could leave with Billy. He kept refusing and grew increasingly angry. He started threatening violence.

Finally, the police pulled into the parking lot. As soon as the man saw the police, he pulled his ID out of his pocket and handed it to the staff.
“He had it the whole time,” said Devin. “We check the list, and he is on the pickup list. Fully authorized, completely approved, zero issues. This man created a live-action hostage situation and takeover because he didn’t want to show his ID.”
At the end of the day, working in early childhood education has taught Devin that the children are not the hardest part of the job. In the comments section, many TikTok users shared similar experiences.
“We always needed ID for pickup, even if we knew mom/dad/grammy for years. If they didn’t have it, we didn’t release the child. Some would scream. Some would go home to get it. Some would sit and play until their spouse could arrive to show ID,” commented one user.
“I had a very similar situation as a camp counselor doing bus pickup. All I needed was an ID, but apparently, the parent found it easier to yell and cause a scene for several minutes (delaying pickup) until getting out their wallet,” wrote another.
“We have to show a special tag to pick up our kids from their Sunday school class at church. This is for the safety of the kids, and every parent should appreciate this,” pointed out a third.
