When TikToker Tina Cooks (@chambersandcharm) was 14 years old, she got pregnant by her 17-year-old boyfriend. Her 12-year-old sister was also pregnant, which prompted an investigation into their family and living situation.

The Department of Child and Family Services told Tina’s boyfriend that he would go to jail when he turned 18 because he had slept with a minor.

So, Tina and her boyfriend decided to get married, which would make her a legally emancipated adult, and he could avoid jail time.

He dropped out of high school to try to pay the bills and support Tina and the baby. But they still struggled greatly.

“We were children,” said Tina. “We had no guidance, no examples. We didn’t have any family to help us or that we could move in with. We found a trailer for $200 a month, and we lived there for a few months.”

The trailer had holes in the ceiling and floor. There was no shower, so Tina had to wash herself with a bucket of water in the tub. They got kicked out of the trailer because they couldn’t pay the rent.

Luckily, a grumpy old veteran named Anthony, who lived next to them, offered to let them move in. They had nowhere else to go, so they took him up on that offer.

Anthony is a disabled veteran who served in Vietnam when he was just a kid. He experienced a lot of horrors during the war.

When he returned home, he isolated himself completely. He never married or had kids. He was also a severe alcoholic and chain-smoker with a bunch of pet dogs. At the time, he cosigned for them so that they could buy a car.

Tina’s now ex-husband was violent, abusive, and struggling with drug addiction. Life was pretty rough. But Anthony was always there. He made sure there was food in the house and gave them money when they were in need of it.

He even intervened and tried to protect her when her ex became aggressive. They lived with Anthony for about a year until they found another trailer to rent.

“Looking back, I do feel like I was very ungrateful to Anthony because I really didn’t realize how much it probably took for him to help us, and that we didn’t help him back,” said Tina.

Fortunately, Anthony now knows just how grateful Tina is for his help. She wouldn’t be where she is today without him. It has been over 20 years since she has lived with Anthony.

Anthony has continued to stay in her life. She talks to him on the phone and visits him on occasion, but tries not to overwhelm him with her presence because he is a true introvert who loves his alone time.

@chambersandcharm

I’ve had a crazy life. This is why I am so grateful for my peaceful little life now. Jesus truly changed me and gave me people to help get me where I am today ?
