Here’s How You Can Create Your Very Own Haunted Dollhouse Just In Time For Spooky Season

Now that it is officially Autumn, fall fans and horror enthusiasts are taking over the internet.

Things like cozy weather recipes and home decor inspiration have been circulating social media like mad.

But, one new Halloween DIY trend is gaining some serious appeal, and it involves creepy dollhouses.

Do you have an old dollhouse from your childhood lying around, or even possibly one your child grew out of? Well, instead of leaving them to collect dust, TikTokers everywhere have been repurposing the houses to create amazingly freaky Halloween decor.

One woman named Haley currently has the most viewed dollhouse transformation video on TikTok. She decided to trade in her pink and white dollhouse for a rich black before adding a bunch of spine-tingling finishing touches.

And the social media community went absolutely nuts over the idea. The DIY TikTok garnered over 3.4 million views, gained eight hundred thousand likes, and spurred thousands of comments.

“Are you kidding me? That looks so dope!” commented one user.

“Oh, I am SOOOO here for this,” wrote a second user.

“I am going to a local thrift store and looking for a dollhouse now,” said a third.

So, if you are totally into the haunted mansion and dollhouse vibes, too, there are a bunch of ways to get started.

Creating Your Disturbing Dollhouse

The obvious first step for this project is to acquire a dollhouse. If you do not currently have one from childhood, you can check out local thrift stores, antique stores, and garage sales.

And once you have the house, the fun can really begin. Most dollhouses come in light and bright colors. So, you can start by deciding on a theme and painting the exterior accordingly.

Spray paint would be ideal since it can seamlessly cover those cracks and hard-to-reach places. And you can choose from all kinds of color combinations.

For example, a black base is perfect if you want to add red blood splatter later. Or you could also use a deep purple, orange, or any color you like.

Then, after you are done painting the outside, you can focus on making the inside as terrifying as possible.

A good starting place is the walls of your dollhouse– since they are probably still a light color or more “happy” design. If you want to go for something a bit darker, you can totally buy some wrapping paper or use designed cardstock. Then, simply hot glue your paper of choice to the walls.

And if you don’t have access to those materials, don’t fret. You can even print out wallpaper designs from Etsy and use those, too.

Next, you can inspect your doll house’s floors. If they are looking a bit too bright or pristine, you can spray a bit of black or dark brown paint and smudge it with a rag. This will make the floors appear run down and a bit warped.

Finally, once you are satisfied with the walls and floors, you can move on to actually decorating. Adding creepy props to each room is essential for really pulling together the vibe.

You can find tiny pumpkins, skeleton bones, and the like at most local dollar stores this time of year. Plus, adding in some twigs and leaf litter can really add a desolate feel. And don’t forget to drop in some cobwebs and freaky-looking dolls to really set the scene.

Plus, to seriously give your dollhouse that final touch of terrifying, you might want to install some LED lights. You can buy lights with a battery pack on Amazon for as low as thirteen dollars to avoid the hassle of plugging them in. Then, once you string them through a few rooms, your dollhouse will really come to life.

This project is perfect for kids and adults of all ages and can be totally customized to all of your spooky preferences. You can draw inspiration from your favorite horror legends or movies, or even visit #haunteddollhouses on TikTok for even more ideas.
