His Stepbrother Stole His Rare Supercar Worth Over $600,000 To Drive On Prom Night, But He Wrecked It

A few years ago, this man received a generous bonus following a great sales year at work. And being that he is not extremely wealthy, he decided to use the bonus as an investment toward his retirement.
Now, he didn’t put the money into a traditional retirement account or anything. Instead, he is actually a massive “car guy.”
“And during a dip in the exotic car market, I was presented with an insane private market deal on an extremely rare manual transmission supercar,” he recalled.
Apparently, the car’s original owner was actually a friend of his from a car club. But his friend passed away, and his friend’s kids were selling the vehicle.
Upon learning about the sale, he realized he had just enough available funds for a down payment. Then, he looked at the car as an investment toward his retirement.
He did not want to disclose the exact model of the vehicle. But, he claimed there were less than 200 of these make and models still in North America.
Plus, the car he got to purchase was completely original, had no damage, and even had low mileage.
So, it’s worth over $600,000– which is more than triple the price he paid for the vehicle. That’s why he rarely even drives the car himself!
But, just last weekend, he went out of town, and tragedy struck. Apparently, he lives in a gated community, and his house has both cameras and an alarm system. He left the car well-secured in his garage and thought the vehicle was safe from tampering.

However, it just so happened that his 17-year-old stepbrother had his prom that weekend. And his stepbrother knew both the alarm code to his home, as well as where he had hidden the keys to the car.
So, his stepbrother decided to borrow the car for the night, and it did not end well.
“I don’t think my stepbrother was even drinking. The car is just not easy to drive. It doesn’t have any safety features and is tough to handle for anyone less than an experienced driver,” he prefaced.
That’s why his stepbrother wound up miss shifting, spinning out, and clipping a high curb– resulting in a good amount of damage to the car.
Thankfully, no one was hurt. His stepbrother had already dropped off his prom date at home and had been alone in the vehicle.
Plus, the vehicle was still able to drive afterward. So, his just stepbrother brought the car back to his garage– meaning that no accident report was ever filed.
However, his surveillance cameras caught his stepbrother red-handed. He watched as the car left his garage in pristine condition and was later returned wrecked that evening.
He was seriously livid when he found out about what had happened, too. But, while his father and stepmother were very apologetic, they have not really taken any responsibility for his stepbrother’s actions.
They originally wanted him to try and just claim the accident against his insurance. But he was not on board with that at all.
So, his father and stepmother eventually offered to just pay for the repair of his car– which should cost under $60,000.
Locating parts for this specific vehicle is not easy, though. Plus, due to the accident, his car has now lost an insane amount of value.
He wound up reaching out to a broker who specialized in these types of cars and learned that, even if he gets the vehicle expertly repaired, the car will lose between $200,000 and $300,000 due to the wreck and non-original parts. Now, the broker is in the process of providing him with a loss of value estimate in writing. And he feels like he only has two options to save his investment.
“I’m leaning towards demanding that amount from the family in restitution, or I press charges for the theft of the vehicle,” he revealed.
In his eyes, these are really the only two avenues he could take in order to recoup the full value of his investment. After all, simply getting the car repaired would still result in a loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
And while he knows that seeking so much money from his father and stepmother would not be a cakewalk for them, he also claims they would not “go hungry.” Apparently, his parents own a few rental properties, which he believes could be sold to provide him with the cash.
Ever since he discussed this option with his sister, though, she accused him of being unreasonable and burdening his family with a major expense instead of letting them just pay for the car’s repairs.
“But I don’t see how I can even remotely cover the loss I’m taking without pushing this ultimatum their way,” he vented.
So now, he’s been left wondering whether forcing his family to pay for the car’s lost value in exchange for not pressing charges against his stepbrother would be a jerky thing to do or not.
Can you imagine losing so much money on a car? Do you think it’s his responsibility to worry about the financial burden on his family, or should they have to make up for his stepbrother’s actions? If you were in his shoes, what would you do?
