We all know that relationships with in-laws can sometimes be tricky. In 2017, this woman had an experience with her mother-in-law that proved that their relationship wouldn’t be perfect.

At the time, she and her fiancé had been dating for three years and living together for a year. They had already been discussing the idea of marriage, but they decided to get married when she wanted to go back to school to finish her Bachelor’s degree, and her dad made too much money for her to qualify for FAFSA.

However, she didn’t want a big, traditional wedding. So, she and her fiancé planned to have a small wedding at the courthouse during the summer.

They broke the news to their in-laws in February of their plans, and she said that her in-laws “feigned excitement.”

A couple of months later, she and her fiancé had chosen their wedding date. Even though they weren’t sure if they would get married that summer, the date would be July 11 if they did.

Then, she and her fiancé informed her in-laws of the tentative wedding date.

“My mother-in-law says she’s so excited and will pencil it into her calendar,” she said.

A month after that, she and her fiancé were certain they wanted to get married that summer.

“We told them we’re doing it, and it will be July 11. It’s definitely happening. So, mark your calendar,” she explained.

In June, she went to book the courthouse for her and her fiancé’s wedding. Beforehand, she texted her mother-in-law and her dad to make sure they knew the wedding date, and they could for sure make it. But her mother-in-law’s response was not what she was expecting.

“Tell me why my mother-in-law texts back and says, ‘I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize we’d be on vacation.’ Of course, I’m furious. We picked that day because it was special to us,” she shared.

Understandably, she was upset that even though her mother-in-law was made aware of the wedding date months prior, her mother-in-law waited until two weeks before the wedding to inform her that she and her father-in-law couldn’t make it that day.

Apparently, her mother-in-law said that the vacation had been booked in January and that it couldn’t be rescheduled, meaning that her mother-in-law should have known that the tentative wedding date would conflict since she’d heard the news of the upcoming wedding.

She pointed out that her mother-in-law should have realized that fact if she’d actually written the wedding date on her calendar.

Later, her fiancé confronted her mother-in-law, and she said that her mother-in-law started gaslighting him.

Her mother-in-law said that she didn’t think they’d actually told her what day the wedding was and that she knew they wanted to get married, but they hadn’t made it clear to her that it was definite.

Unfortunately, she and her fiancé ultimately decided to change their wedding date since her in-laws were 2/3 of the people they wanted in attendance.

She said that she regretted changing the date and wished they could have just gotten married without her in-laws there.

But she and her fiancé celebrate their anniversary on July 11, the original date they wanted to get married.

As of one year ago, she and her fiancé have been no-contact with her mother-in-law.

Do you think she should have changed the wedding date so that her in-laws could attend the wedding?
