Becoming an aunt or uncle is such a special milestone. You get to watch your sibling's heart and capacity for care grow as they parent their little one; meanwhile, you're able to form a strong bond with your niece or nephew without taking on full-blown childcare responsibilities.

It's like getting the best of both worlds. You gain a buddy to dote on and play with, yet at the end of the day, you can still go home and enjoy your usual lifestyle.

While this is the reality for many aunts and uncles, though, certain people still expect their siblings to step up and take on a bigger, more parental-like role in their child's life.

That's basically what happened to this 29-year-old woman, who works full-time as a nurse. Her 32-year-old sister has a 4-year-old daughter, and for the last year, she has repeatedly been turned to for babysitting help.

Apparently, whenever her niece's daycare falls through, her sister asks her to pitch in by caring for the girl.

"And at first, I didn't mind. I love my niece," she noted.

Over time, though, the pattern has become increasingly frustrating for her because her sister kept asking for more and more of her time.

Suddenly, the requests for babysitting have turned into weekly occurrences, and they're always at the last minute. Sometimes, she's even asked to watch her niece three times a week!

That's why she finally decided to have an honest conversation with her sister about compensation. She claimed that she needed to get paid something for babysitting, especially since she'd been using all of her days off from work to help out.

"I suggested $50 per day, which is honestly less than daycare," she explained.

Well, rather than being understanding and appreciative of her time, her sister just freaked out instead. She was told that family wasn't supposed to charge each other. Plus, her sister even accused her of being "money-hungry" and "lazy."

To make matters worse, her sister also got their mother involved, and her mom took her sister's side. So now, they both believe she's "nickel-and-diming" her sister.

"I told her, fine. If I'm 'greedy,' then she can find other arrangements, because I'm done being free childcare. And now, she says I'm punishing my niece," she vented.

So, their tense stalemate has left her wondering whether refusing to babysit her niece anymore unless she gets paid is justified or truly does make her a jerk.

Does it sound suspicious that her niece's daycare keeps falling through multiple times per week? Do you think she deserves to be compensated or should happily do this for free? What would you have done in her shoes?
