What would you do if your spouse gave you a reason to doubt the paternity of your child? Would you get a DNA test regardless of their opposition, or would you feel forced to take them at their word?
This man and his wife have three kids who are all teenagers at the moment. He and his wife started dating when they were quite young, and they got married when they were both 20.
His wife was pregnant back when they tied the knot, and they had been in a relationship for several years. His oldest daughter is 18.
Now, a handful of years ago, his wife and her friend had an enormous falling out, and his wife’s friend reached out to him to accuse his wife of cheating on her with a guy they went to school with.
His wife’s friend said she was convinced he wasn’t the father of their oldest daughter. He brought it up to his wife, who vehemently denied the claim, and she reassured him that her friend was only spreading lies.
He believed his wife, as he didn’t have concrete proof, and her friend had lied about major topics in the past. However, the words of his wife’s friend haunted him as time wore on.
“My eldest daughter has a darker skin tone than both [my wife and me] and looks different [from] my other two daughters. It’s not noticeably different, but there is a difference,” he explained.
“I contacted my wife’s former friend months after she made this accusation, but she said she didn’t want to get into it and said it was none of her business, but alluded to a guy they used to meet when out as a group in clubs called Marcus, but she blocked me after I asked for more information.”
“I did some digging and found some old pictures of my wife and this Marcus, and it was from around the time my daughter was conceived. I mentioned to my wife that I’d been in contact with her old friend and what was said, but she adamantly denied it and told me I should trust her, and it was hurtful to question this.”

He has dragged up the topic a couple more times, pointing out to his wife that his daughter doesn’t look like their family, and his wife didn’t have an answer.
His wife has been pretty evasive, and he has requested a DNA test, but his wife won’t allow him to get one. He’s not sure what to do, because if he keeps insisting on a DNA test, it’s sure to damage their marriage.
At the end of the day, he does want to know once and for all if his daughter is truly his or not.
First of all, there’s already damage to their marriage because of the doubt, and due to his no longer trusting his wife. Considering the age of his daughter, he doesn’t need his wife’s permission or consent to do a DNA test on her. I think he should stop and think about how it will impact him, knowing his daughter is or is not his.
Will he still want to be in her life? Will he still want to be with his wife? He has some serious questions to answer before moving ahead with the DNA test anyway.
I do find it weird that his wife is opposed to the test. If she has nothing to hide, the test would confirm that.
What advice do you have for him?
