We’ve all heard people talk about a broken heart, but usually, it’s just a dramatic way to describe a bad breakup and a tub of comfort ice cream. You never expect that metaphor to actually land you in the ER on a dialysis machine.
For her, the stress of her husband’s double life seems to have physically caused her body to shut down. Is it a coincidence that a perfectly fit woman encountered total organ failure right as her marriage hit rock bottom?
It’s been close to six months since this woman sadly discovered that her husband was cheating on her. Her husband was talented at covering up the affair, and she only caught him in the act after going through his phone back in September and checking on his deleted photos.
“When I confronted him, he told me he loved her and wanted to be with her. I was devastated. We’ve been together 10 years, married for 7,” she explained.
“The next day, he came back saying he [had] made a mistake and wanted to stay. I told him I needed space, so he stayed with a friend for about a week before I asked him to come home. I missed him—he’s always been my best friend.”
They both wasted no time finding individual therapists, and they went on a little getaway to the mountains for a couple of weekends.
While that helped her feel like she was healing and they were on the path to reconciliation, she was still extremely upset by her husband’s actions.
But, he did feel like she was getting the man she loved back.
Over Thanksgiving weekend, which marked two months since her learning of the affair, she had a gut instinct that a work meeting her husband had gone to was fishy.

Her husband promised that he had not spoken to or met up with his affair partner, but she was not convinced of this. She reassured her husband that they could overcome anything; he just had to be honest with her first.
“He wasn’t telling the truth. There was no work meeting. He had met her in his work parking lot. The AP is also married and told him she was getting divorced and wanted to be with him,” she added.
“He says he told her we were working things out and that he wanted to stay with me. I do believe that part… but then why lie about it?”
“It sent me right back to square one—no appetite, constantly sick to my stomach, unable to sleep. It felt like he chose her over me all over again. After everything, it was a complete slap in the face.”
Three months after finding out that her husband was cheating, she grew incredibly ill. Initially, she suspected it was a stomach bug, but after going to the doctor, she was informed she had to get herself to the ER immediately.
Apparently, she was in organ failure!
She had to spend 10 whole days in the hospital, followed by 20 days of dialysis. She is still in the middle of recovering from her scary health ordeal, and doctors are still scratching their heads over how this even came to be.
After all, she’s a very healthy, 35-year-old woman. Organ failure never should have happened to her.
“My husband was there every single day. I think it genuinely scared him. I’m not saying he directly caused what happened to me—but I can’t help wondering if I would have caught it sooner if I hadn’t been going through all of this stress,” she continued.
“How do I not connect the two? How do I not feel like everything I went through is tied back to him?”
Stress can absolutely manifest in a physical way, so I’m convinced that what her husband put her through was the cause of her organ failure.
Regardless, her husband’s display of loyalty at her hospital bed is too little too late for me. I can’t get over his lie about meeting his affair partner in the parking lot and calling it a meeting. I think she should free herself from her husband so she can truly focus on her healing.
