For this woman, birthdays are quite important. She believes they are the perfect way to raise up and celebrate loved ones on their own special day.

“And it’s just nice to have an excuse to get together with a friend or family member, you know?” she added.

That’s why she has always gone “all out” to make sure her husband and her two sons feel celebrated on their birthdays. She even keeps a special calendar filled with all of the birthdays of her family, in-laws, and friends.

That way, she can remember to bring a cake over to a loved one’s house or remind her husband to pick up a card at the store.

However, it just so happens that her husband really hates birthdays.

Now, it’s not like he ever refuses to have his own birthday party. But when it comes to “spending money on gifts” or “buying a card” for one of their family members, her husband will always make a big fuss.

And in the beginning, her husband’s attitude honestly really bothered her. She thought it meant that he just did not care enough to celebrate their lives.

“But I reminded myself that he does a lot for me and the people he loves, so maybe it’s just not his thing,” she explained.

“He’s also lackluster on Christmas, so whatever.”

On May 12, however, it was actually her birthday. So, she decided to go out and buy a beautiful birthday cake for herself from a local baker.

Then, when she got home, she snuck the cake inside and ate a piece while her husband was at work and her sons were still at school. Afterward, she put the cake in the freezer in the garage with a plan to chip away at the dessert in secret.

She thought that if her husband and sons really wanted to celebrate her birthday with her, then they would buy her a cake on their own.

“I shouldn’t have to throw my own party for their benefit,” she reasoned.

Just yesterday, though, her husband went into the garage freezer and discovered her birthday cake.

He was obviously confused by it, too, and asked her what it was for. At that point, she revealed how the cake had been for her birthday, but that still didn’t seem to get through to her husband.

In fact, he just pointed out how a slice of cake was already missing. So, she was forced to remind her husband how her birthday had been on Friday, which was why she decided to buy herself a cake to celebrate.

But rather than feeling bad that she felt the need to purchase her own cake, her husband just asked, “Well, when were you gonna share it with us?” Yikes.

She admitted that she never planned to share the cake with the rest of their family. After all, it was her birthday, and she believed that if her husband wanted to celebrate over cake with her, then he easily could have purchased one for her.

Nonetheless, her husband still did not get the point and asked, “So you’re just gonna eat a whole cake?”

At that moment, she told her husband that yes, she would eat the entire cake– simply because it was hers and she could take as long as she wanted to finish it.

Afterward, her husband just proceeded to call her greedy and accused her of being unreasonable for planning to eat a whole cake by herself.

Then, he even told their oldest son about what happened, and their oldest just laughed before saying, “Honestly, I’d do the same thing.”

So now, she feels like her husband might have been right about her being greedy. She realizes that no one “should” finish a whole cake all by themselves.

“But it’s not like I had it all at once. I only had one piece, and I will take my time getting through the rest,” she vented.

Regardless, in the wake of her husband’s reaction, she’s now been left wondering whether hiding her birthday cake from her family and never intending to share it actually made her a jerk or not.

Was the decision to buy her own birthday cake and hide it really about the dessert? Or was it about how she feels unappreciated and uncelebrated by her family? Did she have a right to do whatever she wanted with the cake she purchased? How would you have felt in this situation?
