In 2013, TikToker Sophia (@sophfriess) went on the worst first date of her life. At the time, she was 24 or 25 years old. A coworker set her up with a guy she met at a bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Sophia thought it was crazy, but decided to take the risk because she was on the dating apps, and her prospects on there were looking bleak.
So, Sophia and this guy started texting. He invited her to walk a dog with him. She volunteered at the animal shelter, so she excitedly agreed to this date. She met up with him at the dog shelter. The dog adored her, but took an immediate dislike to him.
Sophia saw that as a sign because dogs can usually sniff out the bad apples. They continued hanging out throughout the day. When it got dark, they were still walking around Williamsburg.
They reached a pier, which was the moment Sophia was convinced she was about to die. He proceeded to pull out a flask and asked if she wanted any vodka.
She declined, so he downed the entire flask by himself. After that, they returned the dog to the shelter. She thought they would go out to dinner, but he invited her over to his place for some chicken and rice.
She suggested that they grab a slice of pizza for dinner, but he informed her that he wasn’t getting paid until later in the week.
She felt bad that he didn’t have any money, so she bought a slice of pizza and accompanied him back to his place to watch him eat chicken and rice. As he put the leftovers on the stove, she looked around and saw weird demonic paintings on his walls.
After eating, he wanted to show her something in his room. He brought her into his room and even locked the door behind him.

He then showed her a bunch of videos of him being a DJ. She felt totally trapped and was ready to bolt when he started DJ’ing a set for her. The music was not very good.
Finally, she pulled out her phone and faked an emergency. She claimed that she needed to take the call outside or in the bathroom, which made him unlock the door. She called her friend and gave them the address of this guy’s place just in case.
She opened the bedroom door to tell him that she had to leave and found him wearing a gas mask. She was shocked and terrified. She quickly said her goodbyes and ran to the subway.
“It was the most embarrassing date of my life,” stated Sophia. “My coworker never heard the end of it. The story reverberated throughout the company. I mean, I don’t know what this man is doing now, but it was the most weird, awkward, uncomfortable first date, and I should’ve left 30 times before I did.”
The moral of the story is not to be nice. If you feel unsafe during a first date, you have the right to leave! Sophia feels that she could’ve been killed. There was definitely something off about him.
In the comments section, some TikTok users shared their own bad dating experiences, letting Sophia know that she’s not alone in this.
“Once, a man kept talking about making me dinner. I finally went to his apartment, and he made me rice with frozen peas. Maybe it had some salt and pepper, MAYBE. While I was eating, he showed me a slideshow of his ex-girlfriend, like a PowerPoint,” wrote one user.
“I went on a first date with a guy who told me his last girlfriend tried to poison him with arsenic. He brought his own can of sealed soup,” commented another.
“I went on a date once, and we went swimming, and he took off his shirt and had a gigantic swastika on his chest. Hope this helps,” added a third.
