She’s Refusing To Take In Her Stepbrother And His Family, Who Offered To Pay A Sizable Rent, And Have Nowhere Else To Go, Because Of How He Bullied Her During Childhood
When this woman was 10-years-old, her mother got married to her stepfather, Nick. And right afterward, she was basically kicked to the familial curb since her mother also gained a new stepson, Ben.
In fact, her mom was never loving or involved in her life anymore after the marriage. Instead, Ben became the center of her mom’s world.
“There were pictures of my mother, Nick, and Ben all over the house, but none of me. They found any excuse to have ‘family time’ without me,” she recalled.
And sadly, her mother seemingly only iced her out because of her father. One day, her mom even said it was actually hard to love her just because of how much she looked like her dad.
On top of that, her mother and Nick would constantly make rude comments about how she was going to turn out to be a failure and embarrassment, just as her father had.
Not to mention, her stepbrother, Ben, also treated her terribly. But Nick never intervened and corralled his son; instead, Nick just said it was her responsibility to respect Ben. Go figure.
This ultimately meant that her only support system growing up was her paternal grandparents. And she loved them more than anything.
“They supported me unconditionally. They helped with my college, and I moved in with them after graduation,” she explained.
Three years ago, though, her grandparents sadly passed away. But, her grandparents still showed one final act of care by leaving her their home.

So now, at 28-years-old, she has lived alone in her grandparent’s house ever since. And it was quite peaceful for a while.
Well, that was until Ben reached out and tried to weasel himself back into her life.
For context, she had tried to speak to Ben numerous times over their adult years about how much his constant bullying impacted her. Despite all of the conversations, though, Ben never owned up to his behavior.
He just tried to downplay her experiences and claimed that even if he was that cruel, he was “just a kid.”
So, she was sick and tired of trying to get through to Ben and cut communication with him about two years ago.
Just recently, though, she received a random social media DM from Ben explaining how he and his family are about to get evicted from their home. He did not reveal what exactly happened there, but apparently, no other renters will accept Ben and his family’s application to be a tenant.
Well, one renter was willing to accept Ben– but the house is located in a dangerous area, and he does not want his 6-year-old daughter living there.
So anyway, that left her as Ben’s last resort option– especially since she has a big 3-bedroom house with a large yard and garage.
And because she lives alone, Ben was hoping that his daughter, Adeline, could take one bedroom. Then, he and his wife could live in the second extra bedroom.
Apparently, he also offered to cough up a pretty sizable rent for her hospitality. Still, though, there was no way that she wanted to live with her bully of a stepbrother.
She ended up telling Ben no and detailed how living with him would just make her super uncomfortable. Again, though, Ben tried to justify his actions by saying that the bullying was in the past.
Ben also said they would probably never even run into each other at home because they have such different work schedules.
But honestly, she did not care about Ben’s arguments at all and just really did not want him in her house. So, she refused again, and she figured that was the end of that.
After sharing the situation with some friends, though, she was shocked to receive some pretty mixed responses.
Of course, some people totally supported her decision and thought that since Ben never treated her like family, he did not get to waltz back into her life and ask for familial support.
Interestingly, though, the people who are against her decision believe she should be doing this for Ben’s daughter, Adeline.
“A lot of people are telling me to think about Adeline because my decision will have the heaviest impact on her and not on Ben and that I should know more than anyone that no child should be punished for their parent’s bad choices,” she said.
And that sentiment obviously struck a really personal chord with her. So now, she is feeling pretty conflicted about her decision and is not sure if refusing to let Ben and his family move in was the wrong thing to do.
Can you believe that Ben had the nerve to ask for her help? What about her friend’s thoughts– do both sides have a good point? If you were in her shoes, what would you do?
