If you have been in the dating scene for a while, you know how much time and energy can go into meeting people for a first date.

As you’re getting ready, you can only hope that it is a good use of your time and that you enjoy your experience.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Most people have a first date story up their sleeve, where they recall feeling bored, uncomfortable, and feeling zero connection with the other person.

Out of trying to seem polite, you may have sat there and pushed through the entirety of the date, daydreaming about going back home to your PJs and your cat.

TikTok creator @datinginmanhattan shares a story about a first date that she cut short and emphasizes how doing this is perfectly fine and should be normalized.

She met this guy at a restaurant in New York and immediately got strange vibes. She went up to the bar to meet him and saw that he was already there inside the restaurant.

He comes over and explains to her how much he dislikes sitting at the bar and insists that they sit at a table in the restaurant instead. She went along with it, and they sat together at a table.

Sitting there, she noticed that the guy had a shopping bag with him, filled with groceries or other items she wasn’t quite sure what.

She also realized that a good amount of time had passed and no one had come to take their drink order, so she suggested to her date that maybe they should get someone’s attention.

He disagreed with her and explained that he had a bottle of wine in his shopping bag but suggested that they save it for later on in the date.

“It’s just this negative, controlling attitude between the bar and then controlling when we drink; it just felt really, really weird all around,” she recalls.

He then went on a whole spiel implying that people who drink on dates are doing so to hide their nervousness and insecurities.

She disagrees with him and starts explaining that a lot of people drink because they enjoy the flavor and that it’s not necessarily an act that should be looked into quite that much.

Next, he starts to bring up larger topics such as politics, religion, and work and begins to ask her bigger questions.

Turns out, they work in similar fields, and she then asks him how he enjoys his job and asks him for tips on the career.

“He’s like, ‘I don’t want to talk about work. I hate talking about work. Why is everybody in New York have to interview each other about their job’ even though he was just asking me all of these questions about politics and religion,” she detailed.

“If he wasn’t in control of the conversation and what we were talking about, he would like get really cagey and strange.”

At this point, that date had been going on for 30 minutes, and they still do not have their drinks, and she was not enjoying the way he was conversing with her.

So, she decides to tell him she does not feel a connection and feels as though they would be wasting each other’s time if they let the date continue.

She thanked him and hoped that her honesty would be appreciated. However, the guy was very surprised and looked at her with a shocked expression! He obviously thought the date was going well on his end until she expressed her truth to him.

“So he just like could not believe that a woman would have the audacity to get up from the date with him,” she said. Obviously, it sounds like she made a good decision to cut this encounter short!

“At this point in our lives, we just cannot waste time. It’s the most valuable currency. I think it’s perfectly acceptable to protect your and others’ time when you’re not feeling the connection,” she expressed.
