How many dates does it usually take before you’re comfortable splitting a check, let alone covering a four-figure rent payment?
Three weeks ago, this 32-year-old man met a 29-year-old girl on a dating app. Their first two dates were absolutely amazing. He thought they genuinely had chemistry, along with many common interests.
This girl works as a freelance designer, so he’s been aware that she probably doesn’t have a ton of money, but she appears to have her act together.
They recently went out on their third date, and they had appetizers and drinks at a lovely restaurant located in the downtown area where they live. When their date was halfway over, this girl’s mood changed in an instant.
“She got really quiet and then told me she was having some ‘temporary financial struggles,’ because a big client flaked on her,” he explained.
“I felt bad and tried to be supportive, but then she straight-up asked if I could cover her rent for this month, which is about $1,204.42.”
“She said that since I work in engineering and ‘look successful,’ it probably wouldn’t be a big deal for me, and she promised to pay me back once her next project clears. I was honestly stunned into silence for a second. I barely know her last name, and we haven’t even had the ‘exclusive’ talk yet.”
He responded that he felt uneasy lending her such a large sum of money, since they had only just met one another. Well, that made her get defensive.
She argued that if he was truly interested in her, he would jump at the chance to play hero. She then had the audacity to tell him that her ex helped her constantly and never once complained.

As you can imagine, the remainder of the date was incredibly strained. He paid the bill, and they wrapped it up early. He’s now curious if he’s being too mean to this girl, or if she’s crazy to ask him for rent money on only their third date.
“I really liked her before this happened, but now I feel like I was being scouted for my bank account rather than my personality. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of ‘investment’ approach so early on?” he wondered.
Wow, this girl is nothing but a walking red flag! Who asks for that much money on date three? The audacity! He needs to block this girl and ghost her immediately, and you know I rarely condone ghosting.
It’s not acceptable how she behaved, and she’s just out to use him. Run, don’t walk away from this girl. Oh, and if her ex was so great, she should ask him for rent money.
What advice do you have for him? At what point in a relationship do you think it’s acceptable to ask for help paying your rent?
