Navigating the modern dating scene requires a master’s degree in reading red flags, but usually, you get a little more time than just a few hours to spot them before things go completely off the rails.
This 29-year-old woman met a 33-year-old man on a dating app, and she spent a week chatting with him before they arranged a first date.
He did come across as a nice guy. He was sweet, and their conversations were wonderful. Last night was their first date, and it was amazing at first.
"He was good-looking, very complimentary, attentive, and the conversation flowed easily. It felt like he was on his best behavior, and we had a good connection," she explained.
"We went out to eat, but I was not very hungry, so I ordered something small and a lemonade. He ordered a full meal and had wine."
"The date was genuinely nice for most of the evening. We were talking so much that I ordered a second lemonade just to have something while we talked. He had another glass of wine too."
She then got up to use the bathroom, and she knows this sounds strange, but she has OCD, and when she picks up her drink, she has to place it back in the same place.
It makes her uneasy to see a mess or marks on a table from her drink. Anyway, when she returned to the table, she could obviously see that her glass had been moved from where she had last put it down.
It really freaked her out to notice that the guy had touched her drink, because why would he have done that? And then, their date fell apart, and this guy got weird on her.

He raised his glass and said cheers, which she said back to him. He sipped his drink, but she put hers back on the table without touching it. And that is what set this man off.
"He got offended and said you are supposed to drink after cheers, or it is bad luck. I laughed and said it is my second lemonade, and I do not really want more. He kept insisting I should at least take a sip," she added.
"I politely said no thank you, I just did not want to. His tone changed immediately. He became cold and visibly offended. It was strange because he had been very nice all evening, but suddenly felt like a different person."
"At that point, I was not feeling the vibe anymore and just wanted to go home. Then the waiter came with the bill. Instead of simply suggesting we split it, he said something about not paying and splitting it 50-50, which felt passive-aggressive."
Also, this man had ordered a ton more than she did, so she made the suggestion that they pay for what they had consumed instead, which offended him all over again.
They did end up paying separately, and the mood was wrecked. When they finished with the bill and walked out of the restaurant, this guy actually asked if she wanted to continue the date.
She declined and pointed to how late it was. She mentioned that she really had to go home and catch up on some sleep, but he didn't take the hint.
"He then said I could rest with him and we could cuddle. I politely told him thank you for the date, but I did not think we were a good match, and we should go our separate ways," she said.
"He got angry and called me a horrible girl who uses men and thinks I can get away with it because of my looks. He said he treated me well, but I used him for food and attention. Did I, though?"
Whoa, I'm concerned that he slipped something into her drink when she left the table, because otherwise, why would he be so pushy about her finishing her lemonade?
Also, it creeps me out that he wanted to go back to his place and cuddle after things went sideways. What on earth? This guy was not a gentleman, and she did the right thing getting out of there.
My mom always said when I was younger to never order a drink on a date and leave it with a man you do not know, and those are still some wise words to this day that we should all stick to.
