The world can be a superficial place, and of course, when it comes to dating, we gravitate towards people we are attracted to. That’s just how it works. But how would you feel if you went on a first date with someone who said you’re uglier than the people they normally go out with?

This 26-year-old woman recently went out on a first date with a 24-year-old guy who just so happens to be her brother’s friend. Her brother’s friend approached her brother and said he would really like to get to know her.

So, she told her brother that he was allowed to give this guy her number. He did, and that’s how the first date came to be. Seems like meeting a man your sibling knows has to work out perfectly, right? Well, not so fast.

She did think it was strange, because her brother doesn’t exactly have a ton of friends, and she doesn’t go on too many dates, but she did give this guy a shot. Normally, it’s men twice her age asking her out, so meeting someone more age-appropriate worked for her.

The first date started out totally normal. They discussed memes, anime, and music. From there, she decided to ask this guy what he even liked about her to prompt him to say something to her brother.

“He responded, ‘To be honest, nothing much, but prettier girls are too much drama, so I was trying this thing I saw called shrekking…,'” she explained.

Now, a quick side note here, shrekking is a dating trend where you date someone, well, ugly, hoping that by dating down, that person will treat you better than someone pretty.

The inspiration behind this is Shrek, the DreamWorks character whom Princess Fiona ended up falling in love with. Aside from Shrek and Princess Fiona, I’m not sure who else shrekking works for, but let’s get back to this poor girl’s date.

“When I asked him to clarify, he said that I wasn’t normally his type. At this point, I’m a bit shocked, but [I] decided to give a chance to someone who appeared to want to date without superficial reasons,” she added.

“I was a bit on edge, but the date continued normally for a while, until he said, ‘I bet you’re glad for this trend. How does it feel to be on a date with someone so handsome?’ I laughed, thinking he was joking, but he kept pressing me to answer, so I just got up and left.”

She was not about to sit there with a man who acted like she should be grateful for the chance to be out on a date with him.

However, she’s left wondering if she overreacted by walking out of the first date after this guy literally told her she’s uglier than the girls he normally dates, and he’s trying this as his new strategy for finding love.

This sounds like some nonsense a pickup artist would try to pull, but regardless, she did the right thing, ditching this guy. How rude of him to call her ugly.

Honestly, I find this guy pathetic to insult her to her face, then fish for compliments. It’s really sad to be so arrogant and mean. And really, we need to normalize walking out of dates when people act like that.
