Nothing good comes from a combination of curiosity, local legends, and an old Appalachian church, as TikToker Sarah DeWitt (@justdew.itt) found out. She was born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina.
When she was a freshman in college, she was roommates with one of her best friends from high school, Anna. They went through a phase where they were obsessed with anything haunted.
One weekend, they decided to go home. While they were home, they met up with two guys in a parking lot before heading over to a church that was said to be haunted.
“I personally did not believe that it was haunted, but I was down to give it a whirl and go visit,” Sarah recalled.
“The two guys are in the front seat, and Anna and I are in the back seat. These guys, I believe that they were volunteer firefighters, but they have all the things in the truck. They have a CB radio…That’s important for a little bit later on in the story.”
When they arrived at the church, they parked the truck and got out. Sarah stayed back near the truck because she didn’t want to see if the church was actually haunted. The guys walked around and explored the area while Anna stood nearby.
At one point, the guys rejoined Sarah at the truck. They were just chatting when they suddenly heard a deep, dark voice say, “Get out now!”
Sarah was the only one in the group who also heard children laughing in the background.
The three of them jumped into the truck and yelled for Anna to get in. Somehow, she hadn’t heard the voice. They zoomed off onto a dirt road, but they didn’t realize it was a dead end. So, they had to turn around and pass the church again to leave the area.

“And I’m not kidding you when I tell you that the church was glowing red,” said Sarah.
“In addition to that, all of our cell phones turned off, the radio was changing channels, the CB radio was going static, and all of the things they had on their visors were literally just static radio sounds. All the technology in the truck was wigging out as we’re passing the church.”
Eventually, they reached the parking lot where Anna’s car was. Sarah was so freaked out that she decided to spend the night at her place.
As they drove, they noticed a red globular light that followed them the entire way to Anna’s house. Her house was located on top of a mountain, and the yard was basically a giant valley.
They parked the car and saw that the red globe was in the field in front of them. They braced themselves and ran as fast as they could into the house.
They heard church bells ringing, even though it was close to midnight.
About 30 minutes to an hour later, Sarah was on the verge of falling asleep when Anna’s mom rushed into the room. She had been awakened by the sound of the front door slamming shut. They told her that they hadn’t moved since they got home.
The girls finally fell asleep. The next morning, they woke up with scratches and bruises on their legs. After that, Sarah vowed never to mess with anything haunted again.
