While waiting in line to board a flight to Miami, TikToker Jade (@jjaddeeeeee) struck up a conversation with a guy sitting in first class.

She told him that she was moving to Miami. As the line continued moving on, she shuffled to her seat and settled in.

Once the plane landed, she grabbed her luggage, turned around, and saw the guy standing right there in front of her. Apparently, he wanted to find her and give her his phone number.

They started texting, and he was super funny. They got along well and had a lot in common. The next day, he sent her an extravagant $500 bouquet of flowers and asked her out to dinner. Naturally, her expectations were high after that.

On the day of the date, she never received a text from him confirming their plans, but she got ready anyway because he had said he would pick her up. However, he never showed up at her place or called with an explanation.

She moved on with her life, figuring it was a classic case of ghosting. Dating in a new city comes with its fair share of flops, and she chalked it up as another disappointing but forgettable experience.

A week and a half later, she was just sitting on the couch when she received a call from an unknown number. For some reason, she felt compelled to answer the call.

When she picked up the phone, she was greeted by an automated message informing her that she was receiving a call from an inmate in a federal institution. Confused and curious, she accepted the call.

“Obviously, I need to know who’s calling me from an institution, and it’s the guy,” said Jade.

“It is the guy who fell off the face of the earth, and he was picked up by border patrol because he was from Canada.”

The reason for his sudden disappearance finally made sense. Even though he was locked in a cell in a detention center in Canada, he still managed to send her on a spa day to make up for missing their date.

Some TikTok users praised the effort, while others described similar experiences involving ghosting and jail time.

“Damn. I like the effort. Sounds like a green flag to me,” commented one user.

“This happened to me seven years ago. He is still my situationship, though,” wrote another.

“Is it bad that something similar happened to me? I went on a date, and later that day, he ghosted me, but he ended up getting a DUI and went to jail. He called his mom and had her call me, so the three of us were on the call. I met this man two times,” shared a third.
