8-Year-Old Girl Crushed While Rock Climbing In New Mexico And Now Her Lower Leg Has Been Amputated
Callaway Lewis is an 8-year-old girl in Albuquerque, New Mexico who recently suffered a tragic accident while out biking and rock climbing with her family on February 21st.
Callaway was spending that Sunday with her older brother and her dad, and the trio set out for a place close to home that they had frequented many times before.
Unfortunately, while Callaway was climbing on top of a boulder, it slipped right out from underneath her…

Callaway ended up being crushed between the boulder that slipped out from under her and a second boulder.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors determined that she had suffered multiple injuries in the accident.
In a GoFundMe page created by friends of Callaway’s family, it explains that “her tibia and foot were crushed” and that she also fractured her femur. Callaway has had to undergo multiple surgeries, skin grafts, and transfusions.
Although doctors tried their best to save both of her legs, they recommended Callaway get a partial amputation of one of her lower legs.

“It is necessary because there is a very high likelihood of ongoing infections, the foot would have no feeling and would be immobile,” Susan Henderson, one of the GoFundMe organizers said in an update.
“She would have to endure countless surgeries for skin and muscle grafts to recreate a leg that would probably still not function.”
“As hard as this news is, her dear parents are following the advice of the team so that Cali will have the greatest mobility in the future.”
On March 1st, Callaway had her amputation. Susan wrote in another update, “The amputation was quite a bit lower than anticipated – near the ankle.”
“They won’t know until Thursday if that will work. They may need to make another cut higher later. She lost so much skin that the issue will be if they can effectively close the wound that low.”
“Later this week they will be doing skin grafts from the inner thigh to assure a good closure.”
If you would like to donate to the GoFundMe created for Callaway, you can do so here. Her family will not only have to pay for her medical bills; they will also have to take time off of work to be there for her in the hospital, renovate their home to accommodate her amputation, and continue to make sure she gets rehabilitation.
