If you’ve ever been divorced, you know that dealing with divorce lawyers can sometimes be brutal.
One waiter recently had to serve his ex-wife’s divorce lawyer, who put him through the ringer years ago. However, the night ended up going very well.
He’s 45 years old and has three kids with his ex-wife. He used to be a business owner but decided to make a career change after the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, he’s studying to become a therapist and works as a server in a fine-dining restaurant.
He felt blindsided when his ex-wife told him she wanted a divorce seven years ago.
“I decided to be the bigger person, and we had a very amicable divorce where she and I split everything up 50/50, including custody,” he explained.
“I kept the house, and I even continued to employ her after we split. I didn’t even hire a lawyer. We ironed it all out, and then she hired a lawyer who drew it all up.”
Within three months, he and his wife had a very clean divorce.
Then, his life took a turn leading to 2020 and the pandemic. He started abusing drugs and became an addict. He got very sick during lockdown and quarantining and had to go to rehab. He was very open and honest with his ex-wife about his addiction, hoping she would help him and protect their children.
After rehab, he’s stayed sober and committed to keeping himself clean. When he got out, he was shocked to discover that his wife had hired her lawyer to try and get full custody of their youngest child. His wife’s lawyer was very brutal with him and tried to convince him that he didn’t deserve his children.

“The lawyer really tried to stick it to me,” he said.
“She wanted to send me to have supervised visits with my 12-year-old child for two hours once every month, among some other very harsh penalties. I was never going to give up custody voluntarily, and I called her bluff in taking me to court.”
He maintained his parental rights by agreeing to a year of mandatory drug testing, which he successfully completed in 2022. Although everything is sorted out now, it was a very intense time for him.
Although he thought everything was over with his ex-wife’s attorney, he saw her in a very unexpected place. While he was working a busy shift at the restaurant the other night, he saw that an eight-person table was reserved in his section under his ex-wife’s attorney’s name.
He was shocked but knew he could make really good money from serving her large table, so he decided to roll the dice and serve her. When she walked into the restaurant, she was the first person from her party to arrive, so he asked if she’d like to order a drink.
Surprisingly, she didn’t recognize him or say anything about his divorce.
As the table of eight started to fill up, he continued serving them and eventually told them all his name. His ex-wife’s attorney still didn’t seem to recognize him, so he was thankful to only be known as a waiter in a restaurant that night.
He found out that everyone at the table was a lawyer, so he made sure to be extra endearing.
He served their table around $950 worth of food and drinks that night. When it came time to give them their bill, he accidentally forgot to add automatic gratuity, which was required for tables with seven or more people at his restaurant.
When he told the table of lawyers he had messed up and needed to print a new check, they told them if he left it alone, they’d end up tipping him over 20%. He took his chances and trusted them. Amazingly, he ended up with a 23-24% tip.
His ex-wife’s attorney told him he did a great job and that she’d be back by the end of the night.
After this experience, he believes the universe has a weird sense of humor.
“I also believe that this occurring in tandem is not a coincidence and is simply the universe smiling at me,” he said.
If you’ve ever been a server, have you ever waited on someone you thought you’d never see again?
