Have you ever been on vacation with your partner’s family? Did you feel welcomed or a little out of place?
One woman caused some drama in her boyfriend’s family after asking them to reschedule their family vacation so she could join them.
She’s 32, and her boyfriend is 27. Before they started dating, her boyfriend, his siblings, and their spouses planned a big trip abroad.
It was a trip they had been planning for years. Unfortunately, they had to reschedule because they were supposed to take off when the pandemic hit.
She’s been hearing all about this trip since she and her boyfriend were still friends before dating.
“Once we were together for a while, he invited me to go too,” she said.
“I accepted. The trip has been scheduled for later this year, and we were supposed to be gone for a little over a month. I am up for promotion next year, and to keep my chances high, it means a lot of travel and training for my job this year.”
Unfortunately, one of the training sessions for her new position will take place during the trip, so she can’t go abroad.
Wanting to prioritize her job, she told her boyfriend how upset she was that she couldn’t go on the trip with him and his family.

She proposed a bunch of alternative plans, like taking a trip by themselves or talking to his family about rescheduling the trip one more time.
Her boyfriend said there was no way they could reschedule because this was the only time that worked best for himself, his siblings, and their families.
“I could not get him to see my point of view regarding scheduling or how it’s kind of cruddy to go on vacation for a month without the person you’re talking about moving in with and marrying,” she explained.
“Plus, I’ll really need his support during that time.”
She thought her request to reschedule the vacation wasn’t unreasonable, so she took it upon herself to make a group chat with her boyfriend’s siblings without him knowing and told them about her situation. She had hoped they would all be on her side, but they had the opposite reaction.
Her boyfriend’s siblings agreed with him and said she should be fine with letting him go on the trip. She accepted their refusal and thought that would be the end of it. But then, she found out her boyfriend’s siblings told him about the messages, and he got angry with her.
“He called me and was disappointed [that] I ‘went over his head’ to talk to his family like that, and I had made myself look bad because he was now having to defend me to his family,” she added.
While she figures what she did was innocent, her boyfriend seems to think it was too much.
Should she not have asked her boyfriend’s family to reschedule their vacation?
