Back in college, this 35-year-old woman met her 35-year-old husband. They ended up falling in love, and eight years ago, they got married. Four years ago, she gave birth to their daughter.

Her husband is a doctor, and he works as a professor at a medical school. Her friend Sarah also works at this school, and happens to be in the same exact department as her husband.

In December of last year, Sarah asked her out to lunch, and then she informed her that she thinks something is going on between her husband and a 25-year-old girl who attends the medical school.

“She claimed she’d seen both of them give ‘yearning looks’ to each other,” she explained. “She said that she’s known my husband for so long, and she’d never seen him talk to any other woman like this, that he’d been so aloof around women all these years, but it’s just different with this one girl.”‘

“In that moment, I had laughed at her face. I remember telling her that she’s jumping to conclusions based on these supposed ‘yearning looks.”

“That’s why I didn’t tell you before,” she had said, “I was confused too. It’s not like he goes out of his way to talk to her, but whenever they do talk, it’s like watching a slow-burn romance movie. She looks at him like he’s Brad Pitt, and he looks at her the way he used to look at you.”

That really hurt to hear. On the inside, she was beginning to break down, but she smiled at Sarah and maintained that she was reading too much into the situation.

Later on that evening, she tried to bring this up to her husband in a casual way. She literally laughed and pointed out how absurd it was that he could be crushing on one of his students.

She fully anticipated that her husband was going to laugh along with her while reassuring her that there was no way he could love a student, but things took an unexpected turn.

“Instead, he looked at me, all teary-eyed, and said, “I’m sorry,” she added. “I can’t get her out of my mind.”

“I’ve tried, trust me. I should’ve told you sooner. But I thought I could save our relationship, I really wanted to.”

She then questioned her husband about if he had cheated on her with his student, and he denied this.

He pointed out that he does not speak to his student, despite their mutual feelings for one another.

He added that they have no interactions outside of the medical school, and he understands how immoral it is to attempt to have a romantic relationship with this girl.

He revealed his student wrote him a love letter a year ago, confessing her feelings for him. He then admitted to his student he felt the same way, but nothing could happen. Around that time, the yearning looks Sarah picked up on started.

She was so crushed that she can’t even recall how she reacted to her husband breaking the awful news to her.

She began packing her belongings, picked up their daughter, and went to her mom and dad’s house to stay with them. She’s now been living with her mom and dad for the last five months.

“Half of me wanted him to come and beg for forgiveness,” she continued. “But he never did. He comes by sometimes to spend time with our daughter, but that’s it.”

“He never talks about the elephant in the room, nor do I bring it up. I keep checking that girl’s social media. She’s insanely beautiful, almost doll-like, and intelligent. I can’t help but think that someone like him should be with someone like her. He’s always been very good-looking, and I’m more of a plain Jane. She’s the Meredith to his Derek.”

“I don’t know what to do. What do I even tell people? I don’t even know who I am without him. Some part of me still wants him to come back.”

Rationally speaking, she knows her marriage is over and that her husband has no interest in being with her.

She can tell he is no longer in love with her, and he did confess to being in love with his student, after all.

What advice do you have for her?
