When you give someone something old of yours that you don’t use anymore, would you expect them to give it back if you had a falling out?

A woman was appalled after her ex-boyfriend reached out to her after her grandmother’s funeral to see if she’d give him back his old video game console.

She’s 24 and dated her 25-year-old ex-boyfriend for two years. During their relationship, her ex gave her an old gaming console and a few games she could own while living alone in a nearby city. His parents had just bought him a new one, so it was no big deal.

When she moved back to her hometown a few months later, she took the console with her, and her ex was alright with it.

She and her ex ended up breaking up not long after her move, as he wanted to focus on his career and enter a new chapter of his life.

“We tried to stay friends and still followed each other on social media, but after a few months, we stopped talking,” she said.

“I stayed in contact with his mother, with whom I was very close. Now, eight months later, I just lost my grandmother unexpectedly.”

After the loss of her grandmother, she told her ex’s mom about what happened and posted about her passing online. Many of her ex’s friends and family members reached out to offer their condolences, but she didn’t hear a word from him.

But then, the day after her grandmother’s funeral, she received a long text from her ex.

However, it wasn’t a text regarding her grandmother’s death; it was a text demanding that she give him back the gaming console he gave her. He also expected her to drive to his current place two hours away and return it to him.

“At first, I was so shocked by how rude and inconsiderate he was being that I left the message on seen for a while, just to gather my thoughts,” she recalled.

“Before I could, he sent another message essentially accusing me of withholding his property and demanding I organize to send it back within the next week.”

It wasn’t until the end of the second long text that her ex very subtly apologized for her loss.

She was furious and told her ex that if he wanted his game console that bad, he could drive to her house to pick it up, as she was too busy grieving with her family.

Her ex started budging but was still being demanding, telling her she could get it done in three weeks and offering to pay for postage.

“I could’ve just done the easy thing and sent it back; however, fuelled with rage and spite, I blocked him,” she added.

“I don’t know how he can think he’s so entitled to a console he gave away and ask for it back in such a rude way.”

While many of her friends have supported her decision, it’s been two weeks since then, and now her ex’s mom is beginning to ask for the console back, making her more upset.

Should she give in and return the console or stand her ground?
