While dying on a pile of money is no fun and you should totally treat yourself from time to time, what would you do if your significant other asked for an outrageously expensive hair styling tool as a present?
Would you buy it since you only live once, or say no way to dropping such a crazy amount of cash on a flippant gift that won’t get much use?
This 23-year-old man has been dating his 22-year-old girlfriend since they were back in high school. It’s never been a secret that his girlfriend is from a wealthy family, while he is not, but the intricacies of dating a girl from a higher socio-economic status didn’t sink in until they moved in with one another earlier in the year.
“I grew up in a household where we skipped meals to pay the bills. My family is living a comfortable life now, but that mindset of never wanting to relive those hard days always kept me tracking every penny I had,” he explained.
He does not want to ever want to return to being poor. In contrast, his girlfriend’s family is so mega-rich that they have said they’ll pay for their rent.
He’s declined the generous offer every time they have brought it up. While he would love to have that kind of a safety net to fall back on, he would hate to feel like he owes these people for giving him money.
Recently, he launched a dropshipping company, and things are going great after he found a new supplier and invested time into growing his brand.
His girlfriend is aware of how hard he’s had to work to get to where he is right now.
“Despite knowing this, she’s been hinting for a Dyson Airwrap since December. I just can’t justify spending 600 freaking dollars on a hairdryer,” he said.

“Instead, I took her out to a nice dinner and gave her a $100 giftcard to a nice salon. She opened it, and her face just dropped. She didn’t even say thank you. I lost it when she just mumbled to herself, ‘Maybe you should’ve just gotten me a gift card for dinner instead.'”
“I told her that just because her parents bankroll her life doesn’t mean I’m going to set my money on fire for a hair tool, and that for once in her life she should stop living off others. She storms off in a rage, and she’s not been back at our place for 3 days now.”
They have gotten into some disagreements in the past, but he has never seen his girlfriend so livid. He doesn’t think he’s in the wrong for not wanting to drop $649.99 on a Dyson Airwrap, and he is going to stand firm and not give in to his girlfriend’s demands, since he has a tendency to do that.
I don’t understand why his girlfriend doesn’t buy the Dyson Airwrap for herself or ask her parents to get it for her. Why is she so mad at him for not wanting to waste money on this?
