Some people truly do not know what they have until it’s gone, and even then, they lack appreciation for the gifts and kindness that they were given along the way.
This man has been a dad to his son, Mark, since he was one year old, and now Mark is 27. He was friendly with Mark’s mom, Tammy, for several years before she fell pregnant and her baby daddy ditched her.
He stepped in to help Tammy, and then eventually, they began dating. He wasn’t trying to make moves or anything like that; they simply fell in love, and he married Tammy when Mark turned three. Two years later, he officially adopted Mark.
“Tammy took care of Mark, me, and my house. I worked and paid for everything. It was a good life. I had never wanted kids, but I loved Mark and gave him everything I could,” he explained.
“Not just material goods. I was there for him growing up. I attended all his extracurricular activities that I could. I taught him how to ride a bike and how to change his oil. We took him on my vacations. I made sure that when he graduated from university, he was debt-free.”
“He was always a good kid. University changed him. He became distant. He would call to talk to his mom, but not me. It turns out he met a girl who had been adopted, and she had baggage she decided to share with him. He had contacted his biological father, and I was being displaced.”
Mark was Tammy’s entire world, and she never failed to be there to support him. He didn’t fault Tammy for that, even after Mark treated him like trash, since Tammy was his mom.
However, it deeply hurt him to have Mark cut contact with him. Then, Tammy got sick, and Mark occasionally came to see her. They would hardly speak to one another during Mark’s visits.
After Tammy sadly passed away, Mark showed up for the funeral and then reached out to him, wanting to see what Tammy had left him in the will.

Tammy had a tiny life insurance policy that Mark got, and all the other assets went to him.
“Her bank account only had the money we budgeted for her. There wasn’t much in it because she had been subsidizing Mark’s life since he graduated. Like clockwork, every month I would deposit her share of our budget, and most of it went to him,” he said.
“Tammy and I had a separate life insurance policy that we set up. It was more substantial than the other one. We originally set them up in case anything happened to us, the other could have money to live and take care of Mark. I was the beneficiary since I was paying for it.”
“Now that his mom is gone and not helping pay his bills, Mark is calling me for help. I said no. I said he had the money from his mom’s life insurance. Everything else is quite literally mine. Even the car she drove was leased by me. He is upset with me and said that I obviously had never thought of him as a son if I was willing to do this.”
He told Mark to go call his biological father for a bailout, since that’s the parent he picked to have in his life. Mark’s wife, the same girl he met in university who pushed them apart, actually called him to threaten to cut him out of their lives.
She also said he would never get to see his grandchildren when they do end up having them. He responded that he was fine with her threats.
He is actually ok with that, since Mark has already quit speaking to him. He misses his wife a lot, but he has his job and his dogs to take up his time.
He also has his sisters, their children, and their grandchildren to keep him busy, as he’s very involved with their lives.
Anyway, he’s left wondering if he’s a jerk for cutting Mark off financially, despite Mark having a wife and a job.
Good for him to stand up to Mark, who’s the real jerk here. Mark basically only wants money from him, not a real relationship. I understand that Mark wanted to have a relationship with his biological father, but it didn’t have to be at the expense of their bond.
He was a wonderful dad to Mark, and Mark repaid him by treating him like garbage. Not cool.
