She Feels Bad About Quitting A Nannying Gig Without Giving Two Weeks’ Notice, But The Mom Kept Returning Home Late And The Dad Made Her Really Uncomfortable

Just last summer, this 25-year-old woman received some messages from a young mom, who was 21, on Facebook. Apparently, the mom was seeking childcare for two young children.
At the time, the mom was not offering to pay much. However, the woman was a friend of a friend, and the woman’s daycare kept sending the kids home sick or randomly closing for the day without any prior notice.
“And I love kids and might not be able to have my own,” she said.
That’s why she agreed to nanny for the kids, and everything went fine in the beginning. She worked four days a week, with eight-hour shifts.
According to her, the children were very pleasant and well-behaved most of the time, too.
But then, out of nowhere, the woman she worked for began pushing her boundaries.
At first, the woman began returning home a bit late– maybe 15 or 20 minutes after their agreed-upon time.
Then, this turned into the woman getting home several hours later than planned.
“I didn’t say anything the first two times, but it ticked me off when the woman would come home with Starbucks or groceries and not pay me for the extra time spent,” she recalled.

Not to mention, the woman’s 24-year-old husband was reportedly a “deadbeat” who did have a job but earned much less than the woman. Plus, he didn’t seem to help out at all around the house.
In fact, she was even asked to nanny for the children while their father was home. All he did was lay in bed for the entire day, and he actually called her to prepare him some food.
She was so taken aback the first time it happened that she just obliged and cooked the guy something.
However, the second time he asked, she made it clear that she was only there to watch the children. This made the man pretty angry.
“I also contacted the wife and told her I would need compensation for her coming home later and later,” she added.
“They begrudgingly agreed to pay me more.”
Still, she didn’t care that much about the additional money. The woman’s husband just kept making her uncomfortable– watching her as she dealt with the kids and, sometimes, going into the kitchen indecently.
“I was always on edge, especially on days that he was home,” she admitted.
But the couple eventually told her that they would be moving. They weren’t relocating super far away, but the home they bought was 30 minutes away– which essentially turned her 10-minute commute into a 40-minute drive.
It was the convenience of the gig that pushed her to take the job in the first place, too. So, she decided to call the woman that same day and quit– telling the woman she wouldn’t be returning to nanny the kids.
That was on a Friday morning, though, and she was supposed to work the following Monday.
So now, she’s been left wondering whether quitting without giving the woman two weeks’ notice made her a real jerk or not.
Do you think she should feel bad about quitting so abruptly? Or does it seem like the kids’ parents were already taking advantage of her? What would you have done in this situation?
