This 23-year-old woman is currently living with her parents while she finishes college.

She is a vegetarian, but her parents aren’t.

Because she’s a great cook, once in a while, her mother asks her to make dinner for them, and she doesn’t mind doing this.

Also, her mother will occasionally ask if she can cook a potluck or make food to bring to her grandmother so that she doesn’t have to worry about making meals.

Since she enjoys cooking and is happy to help her parents and others, she doesn’t have an issue with this at all.

Almost every night, she cooks dinner for her parents so that they don’t have to stress about making anything.

When she became a vegetarian about six years ago, her parents didn’t attempt to learn any vegetarian recipes so that they could cook meals for her, and they still haven’t.

She has asked them several times to try to make vegetarian food, but they rejected her request, claiming that it would be too difficult for them.

“Or they would promise to learn and then never get around to it/make excuses. The problem is, they love eating my food. Which, I mean, great to know that my food actually tastes good, and it’s not just that I have wonky taste buds,” she said.

Constantly, she will put leftover food in the fridge so that she has meals for several days, but the next day, she checks the fridge and sees that her parents have eaten all of her leftovers.

Most of the time, her mother is the culprit, but her father occasionally eats food she saves for herself.

“Today, I saw my dad take out a block of tofu whilst he was preparing dinner. I asked if whatever he was making was vegetarian. He said no and that he needed to add the meat in to make it taste better,” she explained.

She was fine with this and decided to wait until her father was done in the kitchen so that she could make herself some dinner.

After an hour, she went into the kitchen and started to cut up some vegetables.

Then, in a calm tone, she asked her parents why they wouldn’t even attempt cooking vegetarian meals for her, especially considering the fact that she cooked for them all the time.

Even though she didn’t voice her question with any anger, her father was furious with her, and he responded by screaming at her.

He told her that he didn’t have any time to learn how to make vegetarian meals, that he was too busy, and that no one ever helped him with anything around the house.

“He also started saying that I treat him like a 5-star chef, and I don’t even know where he got that from because I literally never ask him to make me food. I yelled back and said that I make him food all the time and he doesn’t treat me with the same courtesy, that he always watches those YouTube food videos, so clearly, he has time to learn–he just doesn’t want to,” she shared.

But she pointed out that after her father’s outburst, she overheard her mother asking him if he needed assistance with something, and he rejected her mother’s offer, claiming he could finish the task he was working on himself.

In her view, if people were offering to help him and he was rejecting their help, then he had no right to complain.

While she acknowledged that her parents have a lot going on in their lives, she isn’t asking them to make meals for her on a constant basis.

But since she makes food for them the majority of the time, she would greatly appreciate them returning the favor sometimes.

What advice would you give her?
