In her early twenties, TikToker Harper (@harpsurfs) was in a serious relationship. She got engaged, and they planned to move from Charleston, South Carolina, to Los Angeles.
Before moving, she went on a surf retreat with her friends as a last goodbye trip. They went to a tiny surf town in El Salvador and ended up running into Jonah Hill. The chance encounter led her to end her six-month engagement.
So, Harper was paddling out in the water with a surf guide. About 30 minutes later, she saw Jonah Hill paddling straight toward her.
He was waving to everyone with a huge smile on his face. As he passed by Harper, they briefly introduced themselves. After that, he paddled away, and they didn’t talk again that day.
The next day, they ran into each other again while surfing. Jonah told her that he had a dream about her. Apparently, she was just smiling in the dream. Then, he said she had a great smile and paddled away.
Harper was left starstruck. That night, she was in a breath work class with her friends when Jonah Hill and his friend walked into the class.
He headed straight over to her, moved her friend’s things, and sat down on the yoga mat next to her.
After three hours of very intense breathing, everyone in the class was super groggy. She and her friends chatted with Jonah about a movie he just filmed and his therapy journey.
She ran into him a few more times for the rest of the week. When Harper got home from the trip, she was excited to tell her fiancé about meeting a celebrity.

However, she and her fiancé were having some issues in their relationship. They were stressed about the move and were bickering a lot.
“My ex was a previous aspiring actor in his twenties [who] didn’t really make it and also was somewhat of an alcoholic,” said Harper.
“So, he picked a fight with me, bringing up good ol’ Jonah Hill, and proceeds to get so angry that I met him and was interacting with him, that he pours himself a cup of bourbon, chugs it, walks out the door, slams the door, and I don’t see him for 24 hours.”
When he returned, she saw all the signs that he had been with another woman. Clearly, the relationship was over, and she did not cross the country with him.
The problem was that she had already quit her job, signed her lease over to someone else, and sold all her furniture. She decided to go back to El Salvador with nothing but a backpack full of bikinis and shorts.
She ended up having the greatest adventure of her life. She learned Spanish and started a successful private practice for occupational therapy.
She lived there for three years. Now, she has Jonah Hill to thank for all that and for saving her from being in a toxic relationship.
