This twenty-six-year-old guy currently has a girlfriend named Sarah, who is twenty-seven. And it was actually Sarah’s birthday just a couple of days ago.

So, a few weeks ago, Sarah requested that he buy her a new sewing machine as her birthday gift. And even though his girlfriend already had a sewing machine– which he claims had been in good condition and not broken or anything– he agreed to get her a new one.

However, he admits to knowing absolutely nothing about sewing. So, he did about two weeks of research to find a good model and ultimately settled on buying a Brother sewing machine as well as some other tailoring materials.

Just as he was about to press the “purchase” button online, though, he apparently came across the Cricut Maker 3.

“For those who don’t know, Cricut is something that can cut all kinds of things– fabric, wood, paper, leather. It can even engrave metal!” he explained.

“It is used to make DIY projects like stickers, bags, mugs, and necklaces.”

Anyway, since Sarah is super into crafting, he honestly thought that his girlfriend would love this gift. Plus, in his opinion, a Cricut is way better than a sewing machine– which she already had.

“And sure, the Cricut was double the price of the sewing machine– nearly one thousand dollars– but I had some money saved,” he added.

So, after doing even more research, he ultimately purchased the Circuit that comes with a heat press and other fancy tools. And according to him, he really thought it was an amazing birthday gift.

He was even going to tell Sarah that he did not end up getting the sewing machine after all. But he knew his girlfriend’s tendencies, and he had no doubt that she would beg him to tell her what her new gift was before her birthday.

And since he wanted the Cricut to be a surprise, he decided to keep the gift a little secret.

Once his girlfriend’s birthday actually rolled around, though, everything went downhill immediately.

It all began when he gave Sarah the present. And before she could open it, he mentioned how he did not get the sewing machine but got her “something even cooler.”

As soon as those words left his mouth, though, he could sense his girlfriend’s disappointment. Still, Sarah tried to hide her feelings and opened the gift anyway.

At the same time, he tried to hide his feelings and hoped that she would still like the Cricut.

After Sarah actually unwrapped the gift, though, she apparently looked even more disappointed. Then, she was pretty honest with her feelings.

“Thanks… I don’t see why you couldn’t get a sewing machine, though. It isn’t hard to get one,” Sarah apparently told him.

And honestly, he was pretty put off by her unappreciation. Regardless, he still apologized for not getting the gift his girlfriend wanted.

According to him, though, Sarah did not stop there. She went on to claim that when he asks for something specific for his birthday, she gets it for him.

For instance, when he wanted a kettle, she pointed out how she didn’t get him some books.

So, he felt forced to explain himself and tried to tell his girlfriend about everything that a Cricut was capable of doing.

He claims that Sarah just did not listen to him, though, and then pulled out her phone to Google the price of the machine.

Then, once she realized that he had spent over one thousand dollars on the gift, she freaked out.

In fact, Sarah claimed that he could have gotten her four whole sewing machines or even taken her on vacation for that insane price.

Honestly, though, hearing that hurt him– especially since he put a lot of effort into getting her that gift.

And even though he believes it is embarrassing, he admitted to starting to cry despite not being much of an emotional guy.

Apparently, his tears did not really mean anything to Sarah, though, because she just asked why he was crying.

Then, she kind of called him out for doing the direct opposite of what she requested for her birthday.

“I do appreciate your presence, but it’s just that you totally disregarded what I wanted,” Sarah said. Afterward, she also left to give him some space to calm down.

Now, they did have a birthday dinner together later that evening– despite it being rather awkward, according to him.

To this day, though, Sarah apparently still has not touched her Cricut. He believes that she might be trying to make a point. More specifically, how he really wasted his money on something that she would not use.

In turn, while he feels like he had good intentions for Sarah’s gift, he also feels like he might have been in the wrong by ignoring what she wanted.

So, he has been left wondering whether getting his girlfriend a Cricut instead of a sewing machine for her birthday makes him a total jerk.

Have you ever explicitly asked for something on your birthday and been let down by a loved one? Does it matter whether or not he thought the Cricut was “cooler” because it was Sarah’s birthday, not his? Do you think they both handled this situation well or not? If you were in his shoes, how would you reconcile this issue?
