If your partner was planning on traveling to a country classified as not that safe for Americans in order to meet the man their mom fell in love with online, would you do anything in your power to stop them from going?
This 26-year-old man has a 25-year-old girlfriend named Denise, and he says they love traveling and are quite adventurous. Denise is always down to take risks, but that's where they differ.
Not too long ago, Denise told him all about a Nigerian man named Matt, whom her mom met online. Her mom has been dating Matt for the last decade, and they video chat.
"Denise's mother is planning on going to Nigeria to see Matt for the first time, and there have been talks of them getting married during this visit because of the price of the tickets and the wait for a visa making a second visit unlikely unless it was a permanent relocation," he explained.
Denise said she's absolutely flying to Nigeria with her mom, because she doesn't want to miss her potential wedding. He's the one in charge of planning all of their vacations, so Denise asked if he could help her get her ducks in a row to travel to Africa.
He agreed, but when he started looking into what it would take to go there, he kept on finding travel advisories from the US government urging people not to travel to Nigeria.
The U.S. Department of State has classified Nigeria as a level three, meaning you should reconsider visiting the country because of crime, kidnapping, unrest, and terrorism.
"I may be biased, but I believe Denise is very attractive and has a collection of physical features that make her stand out in many places in the U.S., let alone an African country," he added.
"I'm sure that Matt is a stand-up guy, but I'm not really sure what he could do if they got into a genuinely dangerous situation involving less savory individuals."

"I avoided bringing the topic up for a very long time because I knew that Denise wouldn't be receptive to the risk, but eventually my anxiety bubbled over, and I asked her why she and her mother couldn't fly Matt to the U.S. instead, since they would need to wait for a visa and purchase tickets either way."
Denise replied that she's looking forward to seeing Nigeria. He pointed out his concerns about how safe it is to go there right now, and Denise accused him of being paranoid.
He's kept on trying to get Denise to reconsider the trip, but she has just shut him down every time. Denise is no longer speaking to him about the details of her trip, so he's left wondering if he's a jerk for being upset about her staying safe in Nigeria.
"...To try and preempt the Nigerian Prince comments, Matt makes no claims of having money or status, at least none that have been shared with me. He is just a normal Nigerian man," he concluded.
Time to call Michael from 90 Day Fiancé; he might be able to serve as their tour guide. Ok, all jokes aside, unfortunately Denise is a grown adult who can do as she pleases, so if he's already expressed how worried he is about her and she's not listening, there's really nothing else he can do except cross his fingers she stays safe while over there.
He said it himself that Denise is a risk-taker, so no amount of warnings from the government will make her think twice about going to see Matt.
What advice do you have for him?
